Wowzer ok, so now I know why I felt queasy yesterday - little bit too much sun for Muddy Pony!
I woke up this morning at 6am (Lee and Milena get up early to go for coffee and breakfast before work) and walked into the bathroom to discover some of the worst sunburn I have ever had, so much so, that my nose was actually weeping - it really wasn't pretty and looked really bad.
When Lee saw it, he said he thought he'd noticed it last night but that it didn't look anywhere near as bad then. We decided to try and find a chemist to buy some Zinc cream (you always see sports people wearing it, it's the cream that you can get in different colours and it doesn't rub in?) so when we got off the train we found one in the station and as I walked in the lady behind the counter said 'Morning…whoa! Little bit too much time in the sun?' I explained that I was out on a boat all morning the day before and that I had another full day out in the sun today and needed something that would help it and she gave me a great cream it was a clear one so didn't show up, although it did a GREAT job of toning down the colour on my face - it worked like a treat and I kept reapplying it ever couple of hours through the day.
By this time it was still only 7.30am (!) and so we went for breakfast before I headed off in the direction of Cumberland Street and the Bridge Climb office!
All I can say is that I would definitely recommend it to people for the experience, but it's probably a bit pricey for what it is - still, it's not something you would want to pass up!
The views were amazing and I loved the whole experience. No time to waste after that it was already 11.30am so I walked back through The Rocks which is the 'old' part of Sydney cobbled streets and what have you but it wasn't really my cup of tea so didn't hang around much, what I wanted to do was go back to the Opera House to see if they had any seats available for the Metropolis performance that evening - I still hadn't made up my mind as to whether I should go, so decided to leave it to fate, if they had seats I'd go if not, well then, it was meant to be.
On the way there I stopped in at a jet boat kiosk and just enquired about prices there was one leaving in 20 minutes but it was $79 dollars and I didn't want to pay that much for the pleasure, so I started to walk away when the lady said "you want to boat ride?" I said I couldn't afford it, and continued to walk off when she asked if I was travelling alone, backpacking, I said yes and she said she'd do it for $30 so I jumped at the chance! I also told her I needed to run into the Opera House and that I'd be back before it left…
…turns out the showing of Metropolis did have seats available, but only 2 (!) so after a lot of 'umming' and 'ahhing' I decided to do it (feeling slightly guilty and resigning myself to not eating for the next couple of days I got back to the boat just in time to jump on and go (did I mention that I had horrible sunburn from being on the water the day before?)
What a stupid idea that was!
I spent most of it with my bandana on my head like a balaclava because the wind was killing my face - still, I could see what was happening so it wasn't too bad. I enjoyed it too, but certainly would not have paid $79 for it, I'd say it was just about worth the $30 - don't think I'd do it again, it's definitely one of those things where you say you've done it and that's quite good enough!
Still not wasting time I jumped off that boat and straight onto a ferry headed to Watsons Bay where there is a famous Fish and Chip place called Doyle's (when I said I wasn't eating, I meant after today, obviously…) so I got there ordered my meal and sat on the pier with one of the most amazing views of Sydney and the Bridge that you can imagine - it was an absolutely gorgeous day too so I was quite happy just to stay there for a while.
After that I walked through Robertson Park up to a place called The Gap, which is kind of what it says on the tin, a huge gap between the cliffs and apparently a notorious suicide place - Milena used to own a beauty salon on Watsons Bay and she said they have a permanent member of staff on who is literally on suicide watch. They used to get something everything week apparently.
Still not done for the day, I jumped on a bus to nearby Vaucluse and then walked up the coast to Bondi Beach it was already 4pm and I didn't have time to go swimming but I did walk up and down the beach with my feet in the water and it was great, it's so pretty there and a lot smaller than I had imagined but the atmosphere is just amazing and the water was so clear it was like tap water!
I got a call from Lee shortly after and arranged to meet him and Milena for after work drinks at the Opera House bar on the Quay before heading in to the show.
It took an absolute age getting through Sydney on a bus at nearly 5pm on a Friday so I was a little bit late but once I finally did arrive it was nice to sit with them for an hour or so before I headed in to the Opera House and told them I'd see them back at the flat later (they kindly let me stay another night as I was going to the show).
I don't know what to say other than I loved it. Absolutely loved it. The Orchestra were fantastic and the film is a classic, I was tired and starting to feel really worn out, but it was the perfect way to chill out and relax a little - definitely one of my top 5 moments of the trip and the best thing I have done in Sydney so far.
After that I walked about the city for a bit taking photographs of the night lights and then hoped on a late bus to Kings Cross.
Now, during the day Kings Cross is lovely but it is the city's red light district and at night turns into a bit of a mix of characters and lots of drunk people and prostitutes so the bus's don't stop there after 12am they just stop at the end of the road, so I had to get off and walk the two blocks through the centre to get to the flat, which was absolutely fine, I mean the amount of bouncers, police and private security firms in that 2 block radius alone is enough to make you feel safe, not to mention the amount of backpacking places that are down there so I felt perfectly safe.
Although having said that, as I went to cross the street at the lights, a fight broke out right behind me between 3 blokes but it was quickly sorted out as from out of nowhere 4 police officers appeared almost instantly.
Back to the flat and a drink or two and something to eat before bed at 1.30am God, WHAT a day - up at 6am climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, walked around The Rocks, went on a Jet Boat, went on a ferry to Watsons Bay for Fish & Chips, bused it to Vaucluse, walked to Bondi and paddled for a bit, bussed it back to the city, had drinks, went to a show at the Opera House, took photos at night, and walked back through Kings Cross.
I really am knackered now.
No more early mornings.
