Hi all!!
So I'm just waiting for my boat to Koh Phangan, I've been staying on an island called Koh Tao for a few days it's gorgeous!!
So the last place I was before this was Phnom Phen as predicted it was a sad place to be! Although it has brilliant people who were super friendly there was alot of begging and people trying to sell things as it is more poor than alot of areas! The city was still developing alot but that's very understandable considering the hell the country has been through.
When I first got there I met a nice lady from America she took me down to the waterfront a showed me this thing that the Cambodians seemed to do alot. Basically it was like aerobics but in the middle of the street. There were older people doing a slower more basic dance thing and younger people doing sort of street dance/hip hop! You could tell they did it alot because the kids wernt even looking at the instructor and they knew the moves!
The next day we went to a Russian Market that was in the city it was huge and easy to lose yourself in!! The smell was sometimes unbearable! They had meat lying everywhere dead or alive! But the fruit was the worst they have these fruits called durians! They stink like mouldy fruit and egg at the same time! Horrible!! Apart from that I got some presents and a Tshirt for myself! I'm collecting them along the way! After we travelled to the palace which was overrated to be honest! In the guide book it says the silver pagoda is a must see but I disagree!! It was just a bit of taped up silver on the floor! Weird!! The gardens were shut aswell so I was gutted about that!! In the blistering heat we gave up! It was about 40c which is unbearable with the humidity! I have never ever sweated so much!
I met a nice girl and a guy from Germany, we all decided to go to the S21 museum and the killing fields together for cost reasons and its not really something you want to do alone! The museum was hard! We arrived and decided to watch the free film which was about a couple that were separated and detained and eventually killed in the S21 prison. It wasn't very nice to watch.
After we hired a tour guide to take us round she was actually 10 when the Khmer Rouge took over the country so she had very sad stories of how her family was all killed bar 1 and her! She originally had 8 brothers and sisters and her parents!
We went round the prison and were shown the tiny rooms that people were chained into all day except to be tortured twice a day. The torture was to make them confess to crimes they never committed it was sick. There were still blood stains on the floor were people had died. Over 20000 people died there, noone escaped only 7 survived. The museum was covered in pictures of the people who had died there, the Khmer Rouge took pictures of everyone who entered the prison. It was horrible seeing pictures of women children and men who have all been slaughtered in such a brutal way. We were told how they were murdered. Most people were beaten over the head until dead or unable to move and then thrown into a pit where chemicals were poured over the body too stop the smells and kill anyone still alive. I think the worst part is that all the murders were carried out by hand no bullets were use because it was a waste of money. So next we headed to the killing fields where're Khmer Rouge left all the bodies. It was horrible to see the clothes of people still coming up from the ground. You can see the bones rising from the dirt. We were told every time it rains more bones are uncovered and clothes appear. It was very strange as it seemed so peaceful there. No traffic, just quiet.
I then travelled to Koh Tao with one of the girls I met it Phnom Phen called Lauren. We eventually found a place to stay it was nice enough very close to the beach. I have to say, the beach was amazing!!!!!! The most beautiful beach I have ever seen in my life! The sea was warm, the sand a perfect white and all around palm trees! I spent alot of time there just swimming and sun bathing! One day we walked up to a place called view point where you can see the whole island it was really cool!! Difficult to get down though there was a few slips and trips and on the way I cut my foot on coral! Ouch!! Hard work I must say!! There isn't really much else to say about Koh Tao as I did hardly anything but I really enjoyed it and my tan is coming on a storm!!
Anyway it Koh Phangan I am going to the full moon party. I am staying in a lovely bungalow on the beach! Wahoo more sun bathing x
