So i arrived at the airport and took a driver-less shuttle train to the subway. Its definately true what they say. You cook to death waiting for the tin can to arrive, and once you board, a delicious mist of A.C washes over you. Looking out of the window i had first impressions of the city. I said i wanted to come here because i felt like i knew the place. That stereotypical depiction of New York, and even Americans, with their unique ways and unique city. Well, its exactly the same. Children on the corner playing ball games as the sun goes down. Yellow cabs swarm the giant streets. Hotdog stands every hundred feet. Buildings that do your neck in when you try to catch the top. It really is a wonderful city. I sat on a step in the heart of Madison Square Garden for 25 minutes, just watching the world go by. And my god does it go. Its like Central London, only completely different. The atmosphere, the community. Everyone speaks to everyone. Everyone is...well happy. And I tell you, it brushes off...So here i am living in the heart of Manhattan.
After walking the city and exploring for a few hours I went home. The hostel is basically a teeny room with 3 bunk beds in it, filled with 6 big men. Well, we're extra big in comparison to the room anyway. When I woke, I bought breakfast at a food stand. 'First breakfast im buying since i arrived in the city' I said. 'Yeah? Wow man, thanks, that really...it means a lot to me man' replied the american, moving his hand to his heart. 'You have a nice day now man, enjoy the city.' So I stuggled to eat my breakfast, realising that asking for a LARGE doghnut wasnt the smartest of ideas. And that was after the cream cheese and raisen baguel.
The empire state building. Up up up I went, 86 floors, in the fastest lift ive ever been in. I glance out of a small window on my way outside and see the city. Just like the movies. What a city. Helped my geography and now I know all the places to visit. Upper East Side, Upper West Side, The Bronx, Soho, The financial Districs, Brooklyn, Queens etc etc.
OK, gota go, money runnin out. Take care all x
