Kim's European Journey
Leaving for Zurich in 3 hours....
Update: We talked to a woman at our houseboat who lives in London and she says that the reason they don't have trash cans there is because of the Irish car bombings in the '80s. Apparantly the bombs were put in the trash cans and it is just recently that they even put some back. She says that everyone just gets used to carrying around their trash until they get home.
Last night we walked to an Italian restaurant for a late dinner. We passed this woman on the street who was clearly on some kind of drug. But she looked really aggressive as she was trying to pick something up and we decided it would be a bad idea to approach her. A few minutes later ambulances went by to help her. It seems like that is a regular occurance in this town, even though hard drugs are very illegal. Dinner was excellent though.
Our curiosity got the best of us after dinner and we walked through the Red Light District, which is primarily composed of tourists anyways. At first we were all kind of laughing because it is such a strange area. but as I started to look at the girls faces, it became really sad. Very few of them were smiling and most were just standing there. Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam and the girls are tested every few months. But I don't think the legality of it changes the degredation of these women to any extent.
This morning we rented bikes at the train station. I did a bike tour of North Amsterdam (across the river by ferry) and the countryside. There were a few windmills, but there were a ton of dairy cows and sheep. It is a really lovely area and the bike paths are such a bonus.
The weather is really warm here with not a cloud in the sky. The boys are getting farmers tans and despite my use of sunscreen, I still got slightly burned.
Still haven't done laundry. Crossing my fingers for a laundermat in Interlaken.
