Today we visited one of the best tourist attractions on earth, the world famous Ankgor temples. Phally our tuk tuk driver picked us up at seven thirty am, he had a cool box full of chilled water which we were very grateful for later in the day. For the princely sum of 20 dollars (£12.56) he drove us round 3 temples (waiting one & half hours at each) then back to the hotel - a round trip of around 5-6 hours. He was so patient & helpful we were happy to tip well - well every little helps the uni sponsorship. We eventually arrived at the entrance gate where you pay your twenty dollars entrance fee, then take your photo for your entry pass, which took less than 5 minutes. I spent longer in the photo booth in Asda getting my visa pictures, adjusting the seat and rejecting the bad photos, before you know it two hours have flown by.
The sheer size of the place hits you with its massive surrounding moat, I would call it a river rather than a moat. The view is breathtaking before you even enter the ancient temple, the five spires of the main temple of Angkor are the symbol of Cambodia and are known world wide.
It's state of preservation is unrivaled and deserves its reputation as one of the must see sights on earth.
I spent the day walking through the temples and taking pictures, reading the inscriptions on the walls and soaking up the history of Angkor's magnificent monuments. Sandra spent her day chasing the monkeys around trying to take pictures of them.
We then went back to our tuk tuk which took us to the next temple Angkor Thom which took around 20 minutes to reach, again breath taking and stunning and will be a hard act to follow, many of the scenes from Tomb Raider were shot here, with 54 figures carved in stone on each side guarding the entrance, demons on the left and gods to the right it is a magical place to visit.
Phally again collected us as we exited the temple with a bonus pack of Cambodian beer in his cool box, we set off for the next temple at a leisurely pace sipping our Cambo beers, Sandra said there was no hurry the temples have been there for 6 thousand years.
The next morning Phally again collected us at the hotel to take us to the airport, it was a very emotional journey saying our goodbyes, and when we got out at the airport I had my rucksack on my back pulling the big case and Phally wrapped around my ankles.
