The morning started off in a bit of a hurry with Jack Breedon rushing into our room telling us we only had ten minutes to get ready, then brooke and myself rushing around toget ready...only to find out we had an hour to get ready!
We all assembled in the common room at 9am, eager to head off to our placement at the Earth Saviours Foundation. Once we arrived at Earth Saviours we were greeted by the children and staff members who had spelt out 'WELCOME' in flowers at the school's entry gate, the kids were all so happy to see us and looked very excited to start the day!
Brooke, Tyron and myself (Tessa) have been placed in first grade working with 6-12year olds, helping with maths, english and crafts. We started the class by greeting the children and once again telling them our names (as we weren't too sure they caught our names the day before!) Our first task was to help those kids who were stuggling with learning the alphabet and writing the alphabet in their notebooks. We all found this quite a challanging task as many of these kids couldn't quite grasp how to write the letters the right way. We then moved on to maths problems on the whiteboard, where Ty, Brooke and myself were thrust into the teaching spotlight given a pen and told to teach...a very daunting feeling with 22 little faces looking up at you but once we got into the maths problems the kids were very confident in answering the questions.
The next activity was songs...not our strong point but we made it work! we started with 'Heads Shoulders Knees and Toes'- a song the kids already knew (which made it all a little easier!) We then progressed onto "Hokey Pokey"- a song the kids were not familiar with but they all thoroughly enjoyed...they enjoyed it so much we went through the song twice! We then attempted a game of 'Simon Says' but the kids couldn't quite grasp the concept of the game.
It was then lunch time...Brooke and I were given a large pot of a rice like meal and two spoons and asked to distripute it to the children as they came forward with their lunchboxes. We had lots of fun greeting the children from all the other classrooms and distributing the food. They were all so well mannered (unlike some of the kids I have come across in Australia!)
After lunch we were back in the classroom with our final activity for the day- a get to know you game..where we asked the kids
1.Their Name.
2.Their age
and 3. how many brothers and sisters they had.
we started off by tellling them our age, name and siblings then they came to the front of the class one by one and and shared their answers with us. Halfway through this we were told we had to alkl go outside for some dancing. Outside there were 3-4 Indian men with brightly coloured outfits and massive drums who drummed away whilst we danced with the kids. The kids were all so happy to dance with us! After a good fifteen or so minutes dancing we were all exhausted and ready to head back to the accomodation but some of the group were rounded up by the kids for a second dance.
Once returning back to the accomodation we were greeted with a lovely indian lunch and a fruit salad. We then moved onto Hindi lessons where we are slowly but surely picking up the language...words such as Listen, be quiet, and sit down are going to become very useful in the coming weeks at our placement. After a short free time time break we headed to room 167 for a lecture by a University Professor about Indian history, culture and polotics.
We are now headed off to dinner- Pizza and fries! (Lets hope its not spicy!)
We are all very anxious about Uni offers which are set to come out at 12am QLD time so we have placed the lucky Ganesh above the computer for some extra luck with our offers, so fingers crossed the results are good!
Hope you all enjoyed this blog :)
