Sunday 8th October 2006 - We are leaving Tingri early morning by 4x4 to go to one of the highlights of my travel - Mount Qomolangma or Mount Everest!
After about 4 hours drive through river / rough terrain / mountain and dusty track, we arrived at the monastery of Rongbuk at over 4800m. Weather had become cloudy and we could only see the skyline where Everest is suppose to be. Shame! looks like we wont be able to see it today! Our guide is even telling us that the overcast weather could last for few days!
We still decide to make our way to Base camp, at least the experience will be fun, so we believed! LOL We jumped with our bags into some poney cart ride that will take a good hour to take us to base camp - at least we dont have to walk our way there - we were all still suffering from altitude!
on arrival at Base camp, we got welcomed by people fighting over each other to provide us with accomodation in their tent - despite arguing the price, they were all asking for the same price! Base camp was fairly quiet as this is their low season and there wasnt really anyone else apart from us.
We dropped our bags, and after a streneous 100m walk, up a small hill, we were facing famous Mount Everest, or shall i say a fairly cloudy skyline! we all felt disappointed at not being able to see it so took few pictures then made our way back to the tent for some tea.
Despite this first unsuccesful attempt, we decided to come back an hour later to feel the place - when suddenly we realised that the wind had picked up and Everest was starting appearing through the clouds! this was such a magical moment and I felt such excitement. We all couldnt believe our luck and started giving hug to each other - that was an intense 5 minutes! we felt like kids again! LOL
We then spent the next hour taking as many pictures as we could - this was to be the first highlight of my China trip! i was so pleased to be there! and despite a sleepless night that would follow and some unwell feeling due to the altitude and the cold, it was worth every minute!
the next morning we left Base camp early, and made our way to meet the rest of the group, that didnt come to Everest, in the town of Xegar.
