Hello everyone, sorry it's been a while. I have been in Sydney nearly 2 weeks now so I thought it was about to update the Melbourne blog!!
We arrived in Melbourne on Tuesday 19th August after a short flight from Christchurch. We checked into our hostel which was not in the city centre but in the suburbs of St Kilda. Carol and I were in a different room to Matt and Mark as they weren't staying as long as we were. They were lucky enough to be the same room as Jenny and Kate who had arrived the previous day. Carol and I weren't that lucky and were in a room full of idiots who ignored us all the time!!
The 1st evening the four of us went down to the bar to do the quiz with a girl, Emma, from the boys room. Jenny and Kate met us later on as well. We did pretty well in the quiz and came 3rd overall winning a $25 bar tab, even though the quiz master did mark 2 of our incorrect answers correct! We drank the bar tab and then Mark and I decided to have a wander around St Kilda and go somewhere else for a drink. We ended up down Fitzroy Street and went into a bar called Cushion and we really had the worst beer we have ever tasted! It was so bad it made Mark sick Needless to say we didn't stay long and we headed home seeing a possum in a tree!
Wednesday 20th
Cazza and I got up and went for a wander around St Kilda. We randomly bumped into Mark and Matt and the 3 of us made an appointment in a bank to set up a bank account. Cazza and i continued to look around St Kilda, which was a lovely area and had loads of little cafes and lots of cake shops which we resisted! After lunch we again randomly bumped into Matt and Mark and walked to the beach. At 2pm we set up our bank accounts ready for work resulting in 3 each! Don't ask! We met Carol back at the hostel and me and her booked a few trips before later on there was a free BBQ in the hostel bar which was pretty awful to be honest!! We had a pretty early night, Cazza and i went back to our room where everyone was watching a dvd and again ignored us!!
Thursday 21st
We got up earlyish and got the tran into Melbourne. Matt, Cazza and I went ahead of Mark as he was waiting for Jenny and Kate. We went to the tourist information to get an idea of what to do and then we headed around the shops for a while sorting out a phone while we are staying in Australia. We then headed to Melbourne museum which was quite interesting and met Mark in there. He left early to get his phone sorted and me met him a bit later on with Jenny and Kate.
On the way home Kate got very excited about Krispy Kreme doughnuts and we all got one! When we got back to the hostel Cazza and I went to our room and again got ignored so we went down to reception to swap rooms for the next day as Matt and Mark were leaving for Sydney. We had a few drinks in the bar later as we had some free drink vouchers and it was free bubbly for the girls as it was 'Ladies Night' between 9-11pm. Mark, Matt and I then headed into Melbourne for a few drinks and a dance. It was a good night and I took full advantage of the great mobile deal ringing people that night which was lovely as it has been a long time!
Friday 22nd
We got up and checked out of our room and into Jenny and Kates! We said bye to Matt and Mark who were going to Sydney before me and Cazza to get a job.
We had a trip booked to Phillip Island to a nature wildlife park, a winery, the coastal road and to see the smallest penguins in the world on Phillips Island itself at the penguin parade.
Firstly we went to the winery, where we tasted various wines and ports. We then travelled to a wildlife park. We saw a really cute wombat, got a photo with a koala and fed wallabies and kangaroos. It was lovely and a couple of the kangaroos had joeys in their pouches. We then had a stop on the coastal road to take in the spectacular views. As it was going dark we went to the penguin place and took our seats in the stand and waited for the world's smallest penguins to walk up the beach. They were so cute! They were tiny and after they walked up the beach you could see them in the bushes and walking up the hills to thier nests. It was brilliant to see and a must see if you go to Melbourne. After the penguin parade we went to get pizza for tea which was included in the tour. Kate, Cazza and I ate really fast so we could get more and then felt sick on the way home! We got back to the hostel around 9pm after a really good trip.
Saturday 23rd
We got up early and picked up at 8am for the official Neighbours tour. We got on the official Neighbours bus and drove to Lassister watching old dvds of the programme on the way! When we arrived we got off the bus and saw Carpenters Mechanics, Grease Monkeys and The Bus Stopand shelter they always use before we went into a separate area to see Lassiters, The General Store, Charlies Bar, The Lake and the Bridge! It was really good and a lot smaller than I thought it would be. We then drove to Ramsey Street to get photos of the houses. It was really surreal being there as it looked exactly like the show. We got loads of photos of the houses and a couple with the sign before driving to Erinsborough High! It was a brilliant tour of the set and a must do if you're going to Melbourne.
After the tour we drove to St Kilda to meet our 'celebrity' from the show. Ours was 'Janelle' and she was really nice and signed autographs and had photos with us.
We then got dropped off in town and went to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). We wanted to do a tour but unfortunately there was a game on so instead we went on the free bus around the city stopping at the market. We had a look around, it was a massive covered market, selling everything from food to clothes to souveniers.
We got the tram back to St Kilda and went to Lunar Park, which is a small amusement arcade a bit similar to a tiny Blackpool Pleasure Beach but with rubbish rides! Carol, Jenny, Kate and myself then headed back to the hostel and had a chilled out night ready for our tour the next day.
Sunday 24th
Carol and I got up at 6.30am ready for our tour at 7am. We got taken to the office where we got taken to another company's office to do their Great Ocean Road Tour. It was slightly different from the one we booked as it didn't include a stop at Split Point Lighthouse (where Round The Twist was filmed) or include a rainforrest walk as the driver from our original tour had phone in sick! It was, however, a brilliant day. We had many stops on the way along the great ocean road taking in the brilliant views. We saw Koalas in the trees as we drove through the rainforrest which were lovely. We stopped at Loch Ard Gorge and the 12 Apostles which were stunning. We also stopped at London Bridge and various surfing beaches along the way. We got a lovely lunch as well included even though we weren't supposed to be on the tour we were on! We arrived back at the hostel around 9pm after a really good, but long day.
Monday 25th
Today we had a lazy day until our Neighbours night. Carol, Jenny, Kate and myself went out in St Kilda and we treated ourselves to a cake from one of the many cake shops. Late afternoon we all got ready and had a couple of drinks in the room. We met Sarah downstairs, who was on the Great Ocean Road trip with us and after the mix up with the tour had 5 free drink vouchers for Cazza and I so we were happy! We got the tram down the road to the Elephant and Wheelbarrow pub ready for the legendary Neighbours night! We had one drink in the bar before heading into the venue room. We had a few drinks before the 'stars' cam out; Stuart Parker, Rachel Kinski and Dr Karl Kennedy. We got photos and autographs with all of them. Staurt was a total idiot and thought he was way too good to be there! Karl was lovely and a total legend! After the 'stars' left, Dr Karl and his band played for around an hour while everyone danced, it was a brilliant night!
Tuesday 26th
We got up and packed ready for check out. We chilled out in the kitchen area until 11am when we said bye to Jenny and Kate who were flying to Sydney. Carol and I went on the internet for a while before getting the tram into Melbourne. We stored our bags at the Greyhound station ready for the journey later on that night.
I went to the immigration office to pick up my working visa and then Cazza and I got the free bus around the city to the MCG where we did a tour at 3pm. It was really interesting and we saw the media area, changing rooms along with the stands and stood on the pitch. The stadium was massive and has a capacity of over 100,000 people. After the tour we went to the botanical gardens and to the Memorial of Rememberence. It was very pretty and afterwards we went to China town to get some food which was lovely. We then headed to the Greyhound Station to get our coach at 8pm.
Melbourne was a lovely city but we are both looking forward to Sydney now, so until then goodbye!!
