Hello everybody,
Well last week I decided to embark on a voyage to Canberra on my own which I really enjoyed. A lot of people seem to miss Canberra out when travelling in Australia as it is perceived as 'boring', however I found my visit pretty good.
I got the bus on Monday 10th November and after 4 hours on the greyhound bus i arrived early afternoon. I found the hostel, dumped my bag and went for a wander around the city. I went down to the lake, which was lovely and really big and sat and read and had my lunch. The weather was really hot. Later on I went for a walk around the shopping centre and checked out cinema times. I went and had a drink by the hostel and got harrassed by a drunk Ozzie man, who was slightly strange, so I left and had a drink at another bar before going to the cinema! I got back from the cinema around 9.30 and went into my room to find everyone else asleep, talk about a party room that I was in!!
On Tuesday I got up pretty early and headed out to the War Memorial. It was Remembrance Day and there were speeches by the Prime Minister, ex service men and current service men and woman and a brass band. It was good and there were a lot of people there to observe the minutes silence at 11am.
After this I walked down the the National Museum of Australia and spent a while looking around the musuem which was pretty cool and very modern. It took me ages to walk from the War Memorial and it was really hot again so I was very glad when I arrived and entered the air conditioned building! After the museum I walked back around the lake and over the bridge to New Parliament House and then down to Old Parliament House via the Parliament Gardens that were in full bloom and very spectacular. I then went to sit by the lake for a while and had a well deserved rest after a long day with a lot of walking!
On Wednesday I checked out of the hostel and went for a wander down by the University and ended up at the Botanical Gardens. I sat down on the grass and read for a while killing some time before I got the bus back to Sydney. After an hour or so I heard a hissing noise and I looked around to see that all the sprinklers had come on! I legged it will all my stuff onto the path but by that time I was already soaked along with everyone else on the grass (a lot of Mums and babies!) All the babies were screaming so on that note I decided to leave the Botanical Gardens! I got the bus back to Sydney at 4pm and arrived back around 8pm just in time to get back to the flat to watch the Apprentice final!
I really enjoyed my time in Canberra but you definately only need a couple of days to see everything that is there.
So I got back to Sydney and I've been pretty busy as of late. It was Newtown Festival the day before I went to Canberra which was really good. It was a free festival with loads of different stalls and live music. Newtown is where Gavin lives and it is only 5 minutes on the train from our flat. It's a really cool place with a lot of bars and cafes. We spent the whole day there. We got there in the morning in time for the dog show where Matt got weed on by a dog in a tie down his leg which we and a lot of other people found very amusing!! It was a really hot day and Matt and I went to have a look around the stalls and decided to buy a couple of hats that we look really great in! We figured though that when we do our canoe trip (if you don't already know about this, you're in for a treat when we do the blog from Noosa!) we will need a decent hat so we got a sort of cowboy hat with a string we can tighten around our chins!! We look special! We saw a really good band called The Bakery at the festival who we had a dance to! Later on we went to the dvd shop and got out Mamma Mia for an evening of entertainment with Pierce Brosnan!
The other week I also went Whale Watching with Gavin. We had a really good day, apart from the sea being really choppy and me feeling rather sick at one point, however this quickly passed as we saw whales and en enttire school of dophins swam by our boat performing for us which was brilliant. It was made ever more funny by an American woman who yelled so load whenever she saw anything. "Dolphins 11 o clock" It was so funny Gavin and I were in stitches as no matter where you were on the boat all you could hear was her!!
Last week after I got back from Canberra, Gavin and I went got the ferry over to Manly and did a bush walk from Manly Beach to Spit Bridge. It was a really beautiful walk with awesome views over Manly. There were numerous remote beaches on the walk which were stunning. It was a really hot day and the walk took us 4.5hours. After the walk we met Mark and Matt in town to go up the sky tower however we weren't 'dressed' correctly so we went to Kings Cross and got some food and had a few drinks there instead.
On Saturday night, Mark, Matt, Kate and I went to watch a play in Kings Cross. It was really good, obviously gay themed! Kate was nearly sick when the naked men waltzed across the stage!
On Sunday, Mark, Matt, Kate and I went to Darling Harbour and did a Jetcruizer boat trip around the harbour. It was really funny! It started off with a harbour cruise, pointing out the various sites and then we started going really fast and turning and getting everybody wet. We went past a nudest beach where there was a lone man, it was pretty amusing!
I finished work last Saturday (15th) and Matt and Mark are finishing this week so we are going to spend the last 10 days relaxing enjoying the weather before Mark goes back home and Matt and I begin our travels up the East Coast. I'll give you an update on what we get up to before we leave for Cairns.
