Well we had a brilliant time in San Francisco!
We arrived on Monday after all Sunday on the train. We had to get another train out to Redwood City as we were staying with Matt's family there. It was about an hour away. We met Trudy (his great aunt) at the station and she took us back to her house and made us a lovely lunch! We had a look around Redwood City in the afternoon and had a well deserved beer after our train journey!! Later that night Trudy and her daughter Linda took us out for tea at a great steak place and we had a look around the mall.
Tuesday we got up and headed out into San Francisco with Linda and Trudy and we met Trudy's other daughter Lee and her daughter Katie. We went on a boat trip around the bay of San Francisco, under the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge and around Alcatraz. After the boat trip we wandered around pier 39, looking at the sea lions and then we had a look around Fishermans Wharf. Me, Matt and Carol then got a cable car over to Union Square where we met up with Trudy and Linda.
We left San Francisco late afternoon and drove to a lookout point by the ocean. It was so beautiful, we could see all over the sea and the bridges. Then, Matt and me (Carol) went to the beach to dip our feet into the Ocean- it was freezing! We quickly left! Then we went out for pizza tea.
On the Wednesday Matt, Liz and myself went back into San Francisco. We wanted to go to Alcatraz but it was sold out so we rented bikes and biked across the Golden Gate Bridge. Hint, when the lady tells you there is a slight incline near the start of the bike trail DO NOT believe her- it was like Everest! It was funny because it took us an hour and a half to get to the bridge and over it but only 30 minutes to get back (back was downhill!) It was really worth it though as the views from the bridge were amazing and it was something none of us will ever forget doing. After the bridge we had a well derserved ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery (thanks Jonathan and Barbara we are slightly addicted!!) We then tried to walk some of it off by walking to Lombard Street (the crookedest street in the world) The hill to walk up to that one was another Everest, practically vertical but we managed it in the end! Then we took a cable car to Union Square, it was really good this time as we were right at the front of the cable car and could stand up leaning out of the car. We looked around the shops for a bit too and Liz bought shoes (we looked all over gap for these ones she wanted and we had walked straight past them on the way in!). We then took the trolley to Castro where we took advantage of happy hour and $2 beers!!
We got back to Redwood City around 8pm after a really long lovely day in San Francisco- our favourite place so far - we all really enjoyed it there. Thanks to Trudy and Linda for looking after us so well.
We will update you from San Diego when we leave and hopefully put our pictures on soon but we are having problems finding places to upload them.
Speak soon all
