Wanaka was the next stop on our south island itinerary, and we drove there via the Haast Pass, which again had fantastic views of the Alps, and roadside waterfalls and lakes (some with massive boulders in, which must have dropped from the mountains). Despite a freaky incident where we stopped for lunch by a lake and the car got infested with sandflies (!) it was a great drive, with lovely Lake Hawea leading us into Wanaka.
Wanaka is a pretty town with a gorgeous lake and stunning views of the southern Alps in the background. The town itself was quite busy, with lots of extreme activities for tourists. Skydiving is popular here, as the views are so good on the way down! Again we stayed in the youth hostel, and got quite a swanky room with an ipod dock and dvd player. Not bad for a hostel!
We had a look round the shops where we got talking to a British girl who has lived in Wanaka for the past 4 years and loves it. She gave us a few useful tips for our trip too. Whilst in Wanaka we climbed Mount Iron to get stunning views of the Alps and Wanaka and the lake, and also went to Puzzle World, a place that's full of weird puzzles and has a huge maze, which drove us crazy! We then started our drive to Queenstown.
