Nee how, my peeps!
Well you'll be glad to know that we managed to escape Oz before the cyclone hit. Sounds like it was a pretty bad one. It was a category 4 and it hit Airlie Beach (which we left on Thursday morning) on Sunday. It pretty much trashed all the boats and there is now no electricity or running water and food supplies are getting pretty low, so it really was a lucky escape for us. Have to say, we do feel proper sorry for the peeps of Airlie Beach.
After an overnight flight from Brisbane we arrived in Hong Kong at 7am (which was far too early for me). Once we had checked in to our bling-tastic hotel overlooking Hong Kong harbour, we were ready to hit the bright lights and big smoke of Hong Kong and all the delights it has to offer. For you guys who have not visited Hong Kong, I gotta tell ya it's one hell of an amazing place. There is just so much to see, do and eat!!
We took a nose around some of the wet markets. These places are awesome (if you are in to all things gross and food-like!) You can buy anything from a bag of dried fish to a whole pig's tongue, it really is cool, however the stench as you walk past some stalls is really not so cool. You have to smell it and see it to believe it, but it is a quality way to see how local Chinese peeps do their weekly shop. It's not exactly like popping in to Forest Stores!!
After our day at the wet markets, we were well in the mood for trying out some of the local delicacies. We were told that the night market was the place to go. You can pretty much buy anything you like on the night market, from souvenir tat to iPhones, you name it, it's yours for a negotiable price! So after an hour or two of bartering for tat that we did not really need, we were feeling a bit peckish so decided to get stuck in to some of the local delicacies. For the bargain price of 60 Hong Kong dollars you can get your very own plate of deep fried pork intestines, with dipping sauce. Well what can I say about deep fried pork intestines, it's an experience that's for sure. They tasted pretty dungy, and weren't the nicest thing on the planet. Me and Gray managed half a plate between us and then it was beer all the way!! :-)
Most of our time was spent taking in the sights, shopping and above all, eating. On our last day we took a trip to Lantau island to see the world's biggest Buddah f*ck me, he was big!! To get to him you had to take a cable car ride 950 metres above sea level through the mountains to this place they call "Ngong Ping 360 an ancient Chinese village" I have to be totally honest with you, we were not convinced it was ancient, in fact we would go as far as to say, it was more like "Ngong Ping 360 purpose built Chinese village". It was proper comical, it was like a Buddah theme town, with souvenir shops, Buddah restaurants and the all-important Walking with Buddah experience !! which was a bit like a simulator ride. The whole place really was quite strange. Nevertheless, very funny and you just had to go along with it for a laugh. When you did actually get to the Buddah statue, which was about a 15 minute walk from "Buddah World", it was quite impressive.
Our final tacky tourist experience of the trip was dinner at the Modern Toilet ... Yeah, that's right Toilet I say! What a crazy place it is. It's a restaurant where the dining chairs are actually toilets, tables are sinks with glass over them and all food is served in miniature porcelain toilets, bath tubs or bidets !! It's totally off the wall, you gotta check out the photos to believe it.
So from giant Buddahs, eating out of toilets, and eating animal intestines, our time in Hong Kong was up and it was off to the airport we went.
It's amazing how quick a month can go when ya havin heaps of fun. We managed to cram so much in to a short space of time, from roughing it with the back-packers in Perth to having it large in Sydney with Maccas, and running away from cyclones in Queensland it really has been another spot-on trip.
So there ya have it peeps, that's The Whizzel of Oz Part 3 (Extreme Edition) DONE!
