Southwestern Excursion
Petrified Forest We drove a little over 3 1/2 hours to get to the petrified forest. The landscape changed considerably. The area was much drier and desert-like. When we pulled into the park we noticed that our car temperature gauge read 100 degrees. It was hot. We entered the visitor center & watched the movie about the park. We talked with the park rangers and they recommended a few stops along the drive through the park. Due to the heat we only got out & did a few of the short hikes. The painted desert overlook was impressive. Another favorite was the Tepees at the Blue Mesa. We walked the path around the crystal forest and enjoyed that as well. On the way out we went to the original visitor center at the opposite end of the park. Then we headed out to Holbrok, Az . It was 15 min away. Wigwam Motel The Wigwam Motel was cute as can be. It was right on the road of Historic Route 66. Each wigwam had a classic car parked in front of it as part of the decor. One of the cars had a Doc Hudson license plate. Dinner, hotel & firefighters We ate dinner at Popeyes and headed to Flagstaff, Az to our hotel for the night. No suite tonight so the boys had to decide who was on the sleeping pad tonight. When we checked into our hotel Lin noticed several forest service vehicles & BLM vehicles, inside there were many forest firefighters wandering around. Wouldn't you know that Lin knew one of them? He worked with him on one of the fires last year in California. Small world. The firefighters wanted to know if Lin brought his boots with him.
