The reason for heading to the south of Israel was to cross the border into Jordan. We were off to see Petra and Wadi Rum.
If you've ever crossed the Mexican-US border, you'll know what i was expecting. But it was like a ghost town and very civilized and we strolled across no man's land like it was the main street of Bunbury on a Sunday afternoon.
We took a 2 hour minibus ride with lots of locals, to the town that services Petra and settled into our hostel nicely. The manager and his Filipino cook were wonderful and it was to be typical of Jordanian friendliness and hospitality throughout our trip. The next 2 days were spent in the amazing Petra, an entire city carved out of the pink rockface. We hiked up and down on ancient steps as donkeys clattered past, saw views of the desert stretching for miles, replayed the theme song to Indiana Jones in our heads constantly, shared our lunch with a local lady and her goats and admired the red and blue colours in the rock.
Then, Wadi Rum, a part of the desert where giant monoliths dominate. I wasn't really into desert landscapes but Wadi Rum was something else. A full day in a 4WD was unreal and then a night in a berber tent and eating traditional food topped it off. I also smoked my first apple tobacco in a hookah and it was very smooth and slightly sweet - nice. It was also the best sleep Ivé ever had in my whole life; still and dreamless.
Then back across the border to Beersheva, a town in the Israeli desert where we was to meet some of my mum's distant cousins.
