We learnt some facts about the tunnels - it took a total of about 25 years to dig, the locals lived down there for 9 whole years! There were toilets, schools, hospitals and all so that they didn't have to resurface and risk the danger above. There were also lots of booby traps, to kill off any unwanted visitors that did manage to find the tunnels. We got to try squeezing into a hidden tunnel entrance which had been covered in leaves. I jumped down, squatted down inside and then someone popped the lid back over me and I disappeared into the ground. The tunnel entrance was a squeeze even for me and pretty scary stuff! An showed us the air holes that were hidden amongst termite mounds and also how they wore backward shaped shoes to trick Americans in thinking they had gone the opposite direction!
After he'd showed us various deathly booby traps we got the chance to go through 100m of tunnel, there were exits at 20m intervals. It was pitch black and the tunnels got tighter and tighter till I was crawling on my bum leaning backwards. It was very scary because I couldn't see a thing and couldn't prepare myself in knowing how small it was going to get. I almost backed out at 60m, because the unknown was terrifying me, but instead I let someone else go ahead of me, pushed through and made it all the way. It was unbelievably cramped and incredible that the Viet Cong could fit in; the tunnels had even been widened for westerners!
Next we did some shooting at shooting range. I had a go on an Ak47 onto a target. Roh would have been proud, pretty powerful stuff.
After a day of adventure, we got to have tea and snacks. The food was called something like taquira which we dipped into some nuts, it tasted a bit like sweet potato, tasty.
