Wow...... Chichen Itza was stunning!! We had an early start as we left Cancun to make our way to the site. Its very touristy and commercialised after visiting other sites but it was still out of this world. Its one of the more modern Mayan sites and you could see the difference as the architecture is quite advanced. The only thing is that its full of Americans which was the most annoying thing - but weve just got to live with that.
The guide who took us round was so interesting, he was explaining how they built the main temple as a sort of calender and each level represents something to the Mayans. He also showed us the ball courts which was a pretty big even to the upper class Mayans; they use to train like our footballers today but the outcome of the game was a little different. The winning team was the first one to score but the hole was pretty hard to reach or score through!! The winning team captain had the privaledge (i say that with a hint of sarcasm) of being beheaded after the game as a sacrifice for the gods. It was a privaledge because they were helping to fertilise the land and help sustain and create new life, and it also was basically what they trained for their whole lives - mad eh!?!
After we left the ruins we made our way to Merida for the next stop over. It was pretty late by the time we arrived and we were pretty tired so not much to report. Tomorrow is on to the Cenotes for a day of chilling out - woo hoo!!
