Today we were up early for our caving trip. We went to the ATM caves which involved a 45 minute hike through the jungle, and crossing 3 rivers (which had really swelled due the huge rainfall they've been having); then once we arrived at the entrance to the caves we had a further 30 min swim / wade through the cave to get to some ancient Mayan remains and artifacts. The bit in the cave was really tough, because the current was really strong, our guide had been working the caves for 10 years and said he'd only seen it that bad on 3 other occasions - which is not what i wanted to hear!!!
It was all worthit though, there were lots of really well preserved bones from ritual sacrifices that have been there for at least 1500 years!! We must have seen at least 3 different lots, and the guide said that further in the cave was the remains of a lot of babies as they preferred to sacrifice them because they were more pure - I still can't quite get my head around that one but i suppose they thought it was all for the best.
The other guys we went with certainly made our day entertaining - although not sure they knew quite how much!! They were 3 Aussie guys, but very quickly we realised that they were all gay (aka. soft furnishers!). Well, some of the things they were saying were so funny, unfortunately we were laughing at them rather than with them!! Also at one particularly trickly tight spot in the cave, the guy in front of me said to himself "don't worry, you just need to channel the spirit of Catherine Zeta Jones and get through this" - I nearly wet myself laughing but luckily he didn't hear me or see me. The other people on my tour didn't hear it so we were all sharing our individual stories on the bus back home about things they'd said or done - think some of the stories will be keeping us entertained for days!!!
Got an early 6.30am start tomorrow for our trip to Belize City, and then onto Caye Caulker - aka paradise!!
