Apparently the English agreed to repair this road in exchange for Guatemala recognizing the independence of Belize. Surprisingly the road never got built, and Guatemala still don't always officially recognize Belize as a result. I got a lot of stick for this, as it was a pretty uncomfortable ride and it was all my fault apparently!!
