Day Nineteen: July 25th, 2013
Noosa
We have a car again! After yet another morning of waiting, we finally got the phone call to say the Landy was ready for pick up. We cycled the 5.5km to Jay's Garage and jumped in the car. We had decided to give some sort of order to our lives by packing everything into plastic containers - hence rendering our backpacks, and all the rummaging they require, futile. We stopped off and got what we needed, plus picked up some food from Woolys and came back to the campsite.
We sorted through all our belongings and allocated them new homes. The car is certainly more organised, and it is easier to grab what we need without disturbing everything. We had some lunch after a job well done.
One of the good things about being confined to the campsite is that we have become friendly with a lot of the other guests - some who have been coming here for several decades, and others who are just passing through. We love this campsite, and due to the fact that we've put everything on hold waiting for the car, we've decided to stay on until Monday.
With all the hanging about, I'd read myself out of books and so headed to the local parade of shops to a second hand book store. It's a really cute place that does coffee, old and new books but I swapped my old one for one by the same author, and got $4 off! Anyone in my family who is reading this is probably shocked to find that I've finished a book (I'm notorious for hating any form of literature), but have actually come to love it. I was even a regular at Andy's second hand book swap shop in Manly (just off the Corso for anyone looking). Elly wanted to rig up some kind of gazebo or tarpaulin so we drove in the direction of a camping store (so far so good with the car). We could have bought everything in the shop, but settled on two poles and some ropes to set up our existing tarpaulin, tempting as the $300 gazebos might have been. I also bought a head torch: dorkiest piece of equipment known to man, and so far I've resisted. But Elliot has one and I must say it is jolly useful. I'm a fully fledged camper now, Lord help me.
We set off for a run just before the sun started setting - and I found some strange globules by the side of the river. I asked a passing lady what they might be, fearful as I am in this country of being unwittingly poisoned by something, but she told me it's just something sting rays excrete. Nice.
Back at the campsite, Elly had rigged up the tarp, so now our spare tent is covered and hopefully won't be soaked through next time it rains! After our showers we sat down for dinner with Sophie and Dorian (who gave us a green pepper, tomatoes and 2 pastries he got from his work at the bakers today) and had a good chat about Australia Zoo where we are headed tomorrow, and they have already visited. Sophie was showing me some pictures on her iPad of her holding a koala when I saw some photos of her dog at home in Belgium. A black French Bulldog named Bella! SO cute - I want one!
There's a couple from England (Julie and Stew) who have been staying here for a few days, and whom we have chatted with occasionally. They are leaving tomorrow and cannot take all theIr food supplies with them on the plane back on the UK, so they offered them up for the taking. We got chatting for a few hours and learnt a great deal about their travelling lifestyle. They've been together for 22 years, but only married a year and a half ago. Never had kids, but have lived in all kinds of places as travelled the world. Currently living in France and running a ski chalet, they're on a months holiday here in Aus. We took their contact details for when we are back in Europe. Can't wait for a ski!
