After getting in at about 2am...we were woken for our courtesy call at 5am....time for the grand canyon tour! Woowoowoo.
We arrived at the "Checking in" place. Greated by an over enthusiastic guy with promises of a very quick check in, coffee, juice and danish breakfast. In reality it was a 30min wait to "check in"! All we did was get a ticket. Then went to get our complimentary brekkie.... a cold coffee ... with a film ontop...nice, and a plastic danish and a carton of apple juice. Due to the waiting to check in we were last on the bus so had to sit seperately on our 3.5 hour bus journey :(
Half way to the Grand Canyon we arrived at the Hoover Dam. It was incredible...a mass of conrete holding such a vast amount of water. On the bus the driver put on the discovery channels documentary on the dam which was really interesting learning how it was made. About an hour away from our destination we stopped in at a kind of tourist bus stop in the middle of nowhere...couldnt believe people actually lived there. The bus driver told us we had to stop so he could collect his other bus.....hmmmm....very strange. After about 10 minutes the bus driver came back with a bus about 30 years older than the one we had...i was about to find out why! The 22 mile road to the canyon was a complete dirt track and with bumps the entire way....it literally wouldv'e shook the new bus to bits!! I can't even describe how bumpy it was...and for 22 miles! I was still shaking once i got off the bus!
When we arrived at the canyon it was literally breath taking. In fact I did feel rather emotional that I was actually there as I'd been dreaming of it for so long!!! We were directed straight to the flight check in. There were 6 of us taken to one of the waiting helicopters, so strange walking under those blades!! It was such a weird sensation when we took off and within a couple of seconds we were almost on our sides turning sharply! The moment when we flew over the west rim of the grand canyon (with about 4500 ft underneath me) it literally took my breath away....what an amazing feeling!! We flew through the grand canyon and then landed at the bottom, where a boat was waiting to take us on a trip down the Colorado River. The weather was just right, very sunny with a cool breeze as we slowly made our way up stream. We passed the point where they dropped the car off the canyon rim in Thelma and Louise. We then turned round and let the current take us back. We then got the helicopter back up to the top. We had lunch at Guano Point where the table and chairs were literally on the edge of the cliff....very unsettling to start with as there are absolutley no fences!!! We then went to Eagle Point to do the sky walk. Caught our bus at 3 and watched City of angels on the way back. Came home for some well deserved sleep...I think 12 hours should do it!!!
