We decided to fly into Seim Reap due to the horror stories we had heard of crossing the border by land! We arrived to be totally taken back by the amount of Tuk Tuks that littered the streets along with young beggers. They were everywhere.
Siem Reap is not a big place and you can easily walk around the centre by foot, although you have to be on red alert all the time due to the crazy traffic! We visited the night market which was an experience in itself you couldn't walk by any stall without hearing "You want to buy something Madam!"
During the four days we spent here we hired a taxi for one day which only cost us $20 and he became our tour guide taking us around the many temples. One of which included the amazing Angor Wat (8th wonder of the world!) at sunrise...although there was no sunrise due to clouds! I'd spent half an hour in the dark trying to get my camera setting right only to find that my camera had run out of charge by the time it came to take the pictures!
We also hired a Tuk Tuk (which turned out to be a big scam in the end!) to take us to the floating villages. When we arrived he pushed us onto a little boat in which was barely a float... with one guy emptying the water from it with a can!!! This all happened so quickly and next minute we were off bobbing along on the Tonle Sap! It was okay until the boat suddenly stopped and several other fishing boats pulled up to ours pushing young children in our boat and begging, by this point it was getting too much and we asked the driver to take us back. Once on dry land our Tuk Tuk driver was no were to be seen. After 1 hour of waiting we started to panick, it was getting dark and we were in the middle of no where...After another long awaited 30 minutes he decided to show up all deshevilled and stinking of beer, but we were just relieved to have a lift back to the Hostel....We got on our way only to hear him turn the engine off half way home, panick set in due to the fact that the route back was just a dirt track for most of it, surrounded by paddy fields and no real civilisation. He got off the Tuk Tuk, mumbled something and wandered off into the night?! We just sat there still not sure what was to happen next. Fortunatley he was gone maybe 5 minutes, apologising on the way back that he needed the toilet! Finally we got back to the Hostel and swiftly headed for our next destination! We decided to stick to buses rather than head down via boat so took a four hour bus to Phnom Penh.
