Hello everyone! Ok this is the third time I'm writing this so I'm pretty pissed off by now!
We had a pretty good journey to SA, although there was NO INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT, which I was supremely unimpressed with! We got a little taste of Manchester in Buenos Aires as they played Oasis on repeat the whole time we were waiting there! And we arrived at our hostel in Santiago without mishap although pretty tired!
Having pretty much missed a nights sleep we decided to spend the day just chilling out by the pool, make some food and have a few beers. What actually happened wa sthat we met a couple of guys from our hostel that we were drinking with, Ben decided to have a shower and go to bed with me to follow when I'd finished up our beer, and I ended up staying up til 8am in the hostel bar making friends with EVRYONE in the hostel! (this also happened another night but only til 6am) But noone can say I'm not friendly!
The following day was therefore a washout for me as I'd now missed two nights of sleep, and when Ben tried to wake me up at 9 after an hours sleep he ended up doing the free walking tour alone. I did it a coulpe of days later. It was a pretty good tour, although we had to walk for 4 hours and there was a 'voluntary' tip at the end after the guide gave us a sob stroy about how his boss takes 80% and hes only gets 20%, I feel that negated the point of it being free... Anyway it showed us all the important buildings and places in Santiago, with a large amount of history thrown in (I didn't even know who Pinochet was before!) and gave us a general overview of the city.
We went for a big walk around the city, to the markets and up Santa Lucia, a big hill with a fort on top and a great view of the city and surrounding Andes. We also went up San Cristobel, an even bigger hill which you have to ascend via funicular and has a large statue of the virgin Mary on top and even better views of the city.
We also met several Chilean people who were very nice and helped us practise our poor Spanish (until they gave up nand spoke in English instead!) and some even cooked for us! We were introduced to the Chilean drink pisco sour ( a mix of the liquor pisco, syrup and lemon juice) which is apparently very alcoholic, although I got to experience it a lot more times than Ben once people found out he wasn't my boyfriend! I guess thats the benefit of being a girl! Also mote con huesillos which is a street drink of peaches, wheat and syrup, I wasn't keen!
Ben had a slight mishap when he lost his glasses on our first day, meaning he probably wont be able to see for the rest of our travels unless he replaces them somehow! 1-0 to SA. And we ended up staying in Santiago longer than we intended and slightly becoming part of the hostel furniture (a new girl working there even thought Ben was part of the staff!) because I got an infection in my non-existant wisdom tooth, even though I had it removed for the specific purpose that this wouldn't happen! So we got an appointment with a lovely english speaking dentista who prescribed me anitibiotics for a week (so no drinking!) and antiinflammatories as my jaw had swollen up so much I looked like a lopsided hamster. We then finally left and caught the bus to Valparaiso...
