Bolivia could not be any more different to Brazil! It's the poorest country in South America, but it's really clean, well maintained, seems pretty safe, and the people are friendly and very easy to understand! Santa Cruz where I flew into is the biggest city in Bolivia, but it's nothing special really. There are some big markets which are interesting to walk around, but as it pretty much rained torrentially for three days I didn't do that much else, and the best thing about Santa Cruz turned out to be the friends I made in the hostel who I spent the next few days going for food and partying with, and some of whom I continued travelling with!
I travelled to Sucre next, with a boy from the hostel Malcolm, chosing to bus it rather than fly, as it was much cheaper, despite being told that it was one of the worst bus journeys in South America! It actually wasn't THAT bad, if you just didn't look out of the window at the massive steep drop about a metre from the bus, and ignored the rocking from side to side which kinda made me think it was gonna fall over! We even picked up a new friend Paulo on the way!
We also met up with a couple Pete and Kate who came from our hostel in Santa Cruz to the one in Sucre. Sucre is a nice town, and has amazing landscape architecture in all its plazas and open spaces, with the plants making up colourful pictures and patterns, and about gardeners working in each one! It has a mirador with a cool view over the city, although we were struggling a lot with the altitude, every step up the hill we were struggling for breath! There were some markets there too that had the carziest mannequins you've ever seen modelling their clothes for some bizarre reason! Some had tongues sticking out, some had mohecans, there were pirates, it didn't make any sense! But it was entertaining anyway!
One night we went out and managed to pick up a whole load of Bolivian friends, who we then went to another club with and ended up getting locked in! Not in the good way! We were trying to leave and the security guard wouldn't let us, so then we kicked up a fuss, which caught the attention of other people who decided they too wanted to leave, while the security guards yelling at us to " shut up ,the police are outside!" After getting suitably angry and trying to persuade everyone that we should barge the security guard to get out, which we sensibly didn't do, and wouldn't have made any difference anyway as it was padlocked from the outside, we were let out an hour and a half later!
We also found the most amazing bottle of beer ever. Its called Judas and is a huge black bottle with Judas written in fire, and a naked fire woman on the back, with the inscription 'recomendado para expertos'! We were highly impressed!
Welcome to Bolivia, a lot of random stuff seems to happen here!
