Soongies' Great Adventure
Another perfect day in Switzerland - blue skies, sun shining and no clouds in sight! Could there be a better day for paragliding than today? This morning, we headed off to to Grindelwald which is largely a ski resort type of village with access to the slopes of the Eiger and a cable car up to First. We went for a 45 minute walk around the village in a loop (including a very long and steep uphill) which gave us great views of the alps surrounding the area. There was a fair bit of snow and we could see some kids taking ski lessons (Kate shuddered as the memory of her ski lessons came back to her), people sledding and the slopes off in the distance. Then it was time to head back into Interlaken as Calvin was due to go paragliding! Pick up from the tourist information centre was at 12:45 pm by the company - Paragliding Interlaken. Calvin went off in the bus while Kate strolled around town (she wasn't overly keen at being 800 m up in the air suspended from a thin piece of material) until it was time to see Calvin descend from above. There were 6 people taking a flight at that time slot - Calvin and 5 Koreans (Calvin felt he blended in quite well) - so 6 pilots and the gliders also came into the bus for the 20 minute drive up to 800 m above Interlaken (or 1350 m above sea level) to the launch point. Calvin met his pilot, Timo - who was originally from Germany, and after a quick set up of his glider and assisting Calvin with getting into the harness, they ran down the little slope and within 5 seconds were floating above the town of Interlaken! It was amazing - just hanging in the air, flying around, dipping down and then soaring up on a thermal. The views were spectacular all around and seeing Interlaken from above nestled in the valley and between the two lakes was a beautiful sight. A pretty special place to go paragliding for the first time. Timo pointed out different mountains, the lakes and the villages and went pretty close to some trees and rocks on the steep mountain side to catch some thermals. Then after gliding down a little bit, it was time for tricks (Timo did ask first)! Calvin's stomach was feeling fine until the moment when Timo dipped one side of the glider and spun them around which made Calvin's stomach drop. Then it was the other side with a quick swing around! It was great fun and thrilling but Calvin did feel a little green after that... The landing was smooth on the Höhematte Park in the middle of Interlaken. Kate was there ready to capture the moment on camera however she didn't know which glider Calvin was on! Fortunately she just filmed most of the gliders until Calvin made it safely on the ground after about 15 minutes of air time. It was one of the best experiences Calvin's had and he reckons it would be awesome to be able to do it on his own one day... Time to head home via Spiez - a small village halfway back to Thun. There wasn't much to do here except for walking around Thunersee and up on the hillside. We quickly walked down to the lakeside for a look and then headed back home. Calvin was tired from the adrenaline rush. A quick nip out to town to get some rösti and chicken bratwurst to accompany the last of the rice porridge for dinner. We had a good conversation with Regina and Matthias over dinner (they're keen to visit Africa one day and Kate was telling them all about volunteering with Safisha Africa).

kentishclan I know everyone goes on and on about Switzerland... oooh its sooo amazing and all that... BUT there is no denying the amazing air clarity. I remember there being a surreal quality as its just SO crisp and SO clear and SO clean. I can see it in your photos (not just the way up high ones). Cool place huh!
