Soongies' Great Adventure
Clear skies and sunshine - couldn't ask for a better day to explore Interlaken - the town between Thunersee and Brienzersee. It was a toss up between going to Interlaken and Bern - after investigating the options, we found out Bern would be a lot more expensive to take a train there (18 min ride for €15 each one way!) or drive and park (about €30) than Interlaken. Calvin was feeling mildly better today but still a bit ill so, once again, it was Kate at the wheel for the half hour drive into Interlaken. Despite the sunshine, the morning was still frosty - luckily we had our de-icer and scraper for the windows! The drive was very scenic, along the banks of Thunersee and the soaring snow capped mountains all around. We parked the car and headed off to the Tourist Information where the nice man told us about all the things we can do around the area. Expensive things to do too! A return ticket to the top of the Schilthorn involving a train, bus and gondola would cost about €120 each! We decided that looking around the town of Interlaken might be a cheaper option. So we walked on to the Höhematte - an open park where paragliders landed out of nowhere. From here is the best view of Jungfrau from Interlaken, one of the main peaks in the Bernese Alps. We headed around to the lake via a paddock where our shoes got incredibly muddy. The water is amazingly clear in the river and it was just so awesome seeing the tall mountains all around and little villages dotted all over the place. There was the occasional stop along the river to try and wash the mud off the shoes and one stop when Kate thought she could dip her shoe in a pond on a mini golf course - someone must have been watching because the fountain turned on and almost sprayed her! Calvin was feeling better by this stage - fresh mountain air doing a great job - and thought that paragliding in the area was a pretty grand idea. After some research, he was keen to book it in for tomorrow. With Calvin behind the wheel, it was off to Brienz - a town on the other side of Brienzersee. The views from this side were stunning - still aqua blue water spreading out to the base of the mountains. We strolled along the waters edge and found some ice cream for Kate at a grocery store before heading back to the car. It was hot - when we got into the car, the screen read 20 degrees Celsius! We found out about a waterfall nearby in Giessbach so we decided to head there. Kate was nervous about driving on the narrow winding road which was meant to be two way but really only wide enough for one. We eventually made it and had a lovely walk around the forest and the waterfall. Back into Interlaken, Calvin headed briefly into the Tourist Information to book his paragliding! Time to head back to home in Thun taking the scenic route (which meant cliff side driving and narrow roads - fortunately Kate was at the wheel!) and detouring up to the Panoramic Bridge in Sigriswil. This 340 m bridge suspended 180 m high gave us sweeping views of Thunersee and the alps. Back at home for a dinner of more rice porridge (this time with a side of broccoli!).
