Today, Alice invited the volunteers to her church - Nairobi West Friends Church - as they were having a groundbreaking ceremony for the new site of their church. This morning, Susan and Jamal left to go on to their other travels. It was also Alice's birthday today - she turned 54! One of the other volunteers - Laura (from Perth) got her hair braided. It took 3 hours to do! Kate and Calvin went to Mwangaza SDA Church this Sabbath morning. Today was a shorter day at the school as we had a leaving lunch for 2 of the volunteers (Susan and Jamal) so we got to go home for lunch and stay at home! Fridays at the school are very relaxed – there was about 1 hour of academic learning and then lots of singing and dancing (we had no idea what we were supposed to be doing). The kids at the school can really move their hips though – so cute! The kids also do a fashion catwalk and have story time.

Another day of volunteering – got to do some more hands on stuff as a few of the volunteers took 5 of the kids to a the elephant orphanage so we were busier. Calvin even ran a class all by himself! During one of the classes for children aged 4-6, the focus was on subtraction. Children had to go up one by one to answer a question such as 6-3. Our first proper day of volunteering! A driver drove us (along with another 4 volunteers) to the school. The school is located in a very poor area of Nairobi. It is a charity school which means these children get to attend a school which is better than the state school. Apparently it is typical for there to be about 100 kids in each class at the state schools and the children get treated very poorly so this is a much better alternative for children. There are 2...
