We were so exhausted after our flights that we decided to take today and explore the beaches of Naples instead of trekking up Mount Vesuvius (which we'll be doing tomorrow with any luck). We took a ferry early in the morning to Ischia, one of the islands off the coast. The ride lasted about two hours, and our skins were already baking by the time we got off. This heat is no joke. Once in Ischia we strolled through the streets and purchased some wine and fruit from the markets and headed to the bus line where we caught a ride to a beach on the other side of the island that the receptionist at our hostel recommended. It was a long, sweaty ride, but the people were friendly and the scenery was exceptional. Most of the coastline was composed of giant rocks that plunged down into the water, though some more adventurous sunbathers were using them as a sort of makeshift beach. The sandy beaches that we did pass, however, were crowded beyond belief. We hoped that the beach we were headed for would be more isolated, but were disappointed. There were people everywhere, and the lounge chairs were pressed so close together, you could touch a neighbor on either side of you on accident. We tried to walk to the end of the chairs, but there seemed to be no real end, just one long swathe of heavily people beach that stretched on forever. And the sand was burning our feet even through our sandals, so we rented a set of chairs and sunbathed for a few hours with good books, terrible wine, and some bread and fruit. We left sun-sleepy and content with our day of relaxation (if a bit sunburned).
