So, after our three flights (a total of about 12 hours of flight), we finally landed in Naples. We got off the plane, picked up our luggage, and stepped out into a brilliant sunny Italian day. We had printed directions to the hostel prior to our departure, and the bus that we were supposed to take was directly across the street from the exit of the airport. So, we hopped on that (thankfully, we had remembered to already exchange our dollars for euros), and rode it through Naples for about twenty minutes. The city is a mixture of ancient crumbling architecture, graffiti, and incredible heat, and the bus smelled like a big bundle of onions. We did see some incredible scenery, though. There were crumbling castles and mountains with houses peppering thier slopes. We got off at our stop and walked just a few feet before coming to the road our hostel is on. We turned down the cobbled side street, nearly being mowed down by several motorists in the process, and proceeded to pass the Hostel of the Sun twice before recognizing it. It is a nondescript bedraggled building nearly ten stories high with signs posted next to the entry that say press #51 and the bell button to buzz the hostel. So, we did. A lady answered and buzzed us in, though an Italian man with salt and pepper hair was already holding the door open for us. So, we entered the building and turned left where I saw the tiniest elevator I've ever encountered. It was about two feet wide, and it was actually referred to as a lift because calling it an elevator is just more than it deserves. However, this particular lift requires 5 cents to operate, which we did not have. So, we huffed our way up seven flights of stairs with our backpacks on while and elderly Italian woman laughed as she got off the elevator and said "No money! No money! You climb. Haha" as her scruffy tan dog followed her into her apartment. When we finally made our way to the seventh floor, we composed ourselves for a second and entered the hostel. We were met by the most kind and bubbly lady. She took us to our room and let us clean up some before we even checked in! She knew how exhausted and gross we felt. Our room has three sets of metal framed bunk beds in it and a set of six lockers with keys. When we were finished putting our things away, we came back to the front and checked in. She checked our IDs and proceeded to fill us in on all the touristy details about Naples. After that, Carrie and I headed to downtown Naples to find some food. It was a pretty quick walk—about fifteen minutes. But when we got there it seemed that all the shops were either closed or were closing. So, we walked around and took some photos and got some fresh gelato and peaches and headed back to the hostel. Tomorrow, we're planning to get up early and check out Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum or Pompei--or ditch that plan altogether and go to the beach...
