Today the two of us ventured out in the light rain and viewed the many famous sites including Sigmund Freud's office, the "father of psychoanalysis." Also we saw St. Stephen's, but this time we went inside to have a view. Later we found our way to the city center where we had hot chocolate and people-watched which I have come to enjoy immensely. We ended our day by using the underground trains, which are based on an honor system of purchasing tickets, which we did not. Sorry Austria, I owe you .35c.
The underground subway took us to the HapsburgPalace which was MASSIVE. We decided to make use of a paid tour inside the main palace, and walked around the grounds which were incredibly large. To give you an idea of how large this castle was; I will attempt to compare just the size alone. The main palace (there are about 4-5 smaller ones) was about the size of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. The grounds which held all the palaces, gardens, parks, and fountains took up an area similar to that of Central Park but on a large hill. To compare the inside of the castle is not possible as there were lots of priceless paintings, bedrooms, and other items. The ceilings were raised and many of the rooms used gold in the decor. The Hapsburgs enjoyed a family rein for hundreds of years and had a vast amount of wealth that was passed down to each generation. The view from the small palace on top of the hill provided a glimpse at the surrounding city of Vienna with the palace below. We ate a late lunch in the local café- how many of you have eaten in a castle? After exploring the city some, we headed back to the hotel to relax and prepare for our next country.
