First day in Kandy, I was really excited to explore the place! We had a personal driver called Pet, he took us out on the Tuk Tuk for only 3000 rupees all day, what a bargain. He was full of knowledge, he actually knows everything about Sri Lanka. We agreed that we would go to the tea factory, gem factory & shop, spice garden and tooth of temple with kandyan fire show. So we set off and first stop, visiting a tea plantation as Pet wanted us to start from the first process of picking the leaves, on to the tea factory where they sieve the leaves and squeeze it, then grinding it to dust-like powder as the end result...the tea factory showed everything from the first step to the end, I found it really interesting and best of it all...it was free! We went upstairs to the cafe where they gave us a free cup of tea, it was lovely, in fact Molly decided to purchase a tea packet from the factory shop. Pet took us to the gem factory which was also free! The gem factory was good, I enjoyed learning a bit on how the process of the gem started from mining to the end result of beautiful jewellery, we were guided up to a gem shop, I decided to buy something from that shop as it had a certificate stating that its genuine and original. So I was sat there going through a collection of glitzy rings, glimmering necklaces and earrings....I opted for a ring as it was something I would always wear whereas a necklace/earrings I would easily lose! The dilemma for me was my birthstone, it's diamond/white sapphire but I already had a ring like that, I particularly liked the blue sapphire gem so I asked which month was that birthstone? He replied 'September' I was a bit taken aback because it was my boyfriend's birthday month! The fate obviously has led me to it so I chose that gem with a different ring design that I wanted. It cost me 75 pounds in pounds but it was really worth the money, it's my commitment ring to him, and funnily enough Asher would be grinning with a hint of his ego persona, all of this because he supports Leicester city and their team's colour is blue...(Sorry to those in my family who supports Liverpool!) I also bought a little something for Judy but I cannot say what it was until she opens it! :-) The total bill came to 23,000 rupees....my bank manager isn't going to be happy haha! I genuinely hope she will like it. Anyway Molly bought a ring for herself, in her own birthstone of February, we set off with Pet to the spice garden. Let just say it was very informative! He actually just babbled all way through the tour of showing us each tree that produces each different things such as aloe vera, cinnamon, cocoa and ginger. (I told Molly that she should be the promotion model for that particular spice!) I could not stop laughing at the saying, she just commented that she was very proud to be ginger laughing at the same time! It's nice that we get on really well enough for her to get my joke without being insulted. We got pressured to buy something from the shop but we declined, feeling a bit bad because the tour was also free....The next stop for us was the market! I was excited to see what the fuss was all about, firstly the market was not what I expected, secondly nobody warned me there would be a guy who follows you around trying to put off the potential sellers just because he wants you to buy things from his shop. (nonetheless I actually enjoyed the experience just because I can laugh about it now!) I bought a finely detailed hand painted batik with an elephant as the main display splashed with my favourite colours, (it's Purple and Burgundy by the way...) for 300 rupees! What a bargain considering the size of it, (No Asher, it wont take up too much space!) 5pm came by, we had to stop shopping unfortunately...As we had to catch the Kandyan fire show. Pet took us up the hill to show us incredible views on a Buddha temple which was reflecting off the beautiful lake. The kandyan show was fantastic especially when we just paid 500 rupees. it had a couple of boring dances but the rest of the show had us hooked with their carefree attitude, a man stuck a stick which was flaming with fire down his throat unharmed. The ending was somewhat unique yet weird...three men walked on a tank filled with burning coal, the fire glistening at the cameras. There was ash on my clothes! Let just say it was very eye-catching. Pet was waiting for us outside and when I asked him where was the temple of the tooth? He gave me that look....that look when men makes it very clear that he likes you. I was not sure whether I'd imagined it so I left it at that, How wrong I was. The temple of tooth was only a five minutes walk away from the show so Molly and I set off, passing the most stunning lake you could ever see. The temple of tooth was costly at 1000 rupees, but apparently it is the best in Sri Lanka because of the sacred story that the buddha tooth was stored in a gold casket in that particular temple. I felt like it was a waste of my money seeing that there were a long queue to see the casket and it didn't move an inch for around 15 minutes. There was some heartfelt engravings around the arch of the doorways, painted murals on the walls and exceptionally accurate detail of the buddha statue on the tiles so if you're interested in these sort of things then in that case, give it a go. I felt weary after a long day exploring Kandy so we headed back to the hotel, we were hungry so we went to the rooftop restaurant and ordered chips. Pet happened to join us and I had this feeling in my stomach that he had an motive. Rightly enough he texted me that night asking me to keep a secret. He confessed that he really liked me, i texted him back saying that i didn't keep any secrets and i had a boyfriend. The reply; he was disappointed I had a boyfriend. It had unnerved me a bit because he was in same building as me, I tried not to think about it and went to sleep.
