My first day in Sri Lanka was very different to the typical day to day life back home. The moment I arrived in Colombo airport, I was in desperate need for the toilet! Eventually I found it on the way to the baggage claim which took so long, I finally got my suitcase after waiting for like 25 minutes. Sri Lanka very slow and lazy?! I saw a guy holding "SL volunteers" on the paper card, I approached him and revealed that I was one of them, then all at once there was three another volunteers coming closely behind me. We were exchanged our names, where did we live and how old we were. I explained that I was deaf and they seemed to take it well. We got escorted to a white small van resembling VW campervan! (sorry Ashley!) It was ultimately hot with sand from the roads sweeping away in my face, it was humid at 9am in the morning! An hour and half later, we arrived to our home for the next 8 weeks. Yasintha was there to introduce us to the rest of her family. I discovered that the guy picking us up from airport was in fact yasintha's brother. The room I was put in, let just say it was awful. There were stained paint on the walls, little ants running through the floor and I felt really down, tired. I missed home already and the sight of the room did not help at all then I reminded myself that Sri Lanka was very basic and a poor country. I sorted out a few of my stuff such as pillow and blankets plus clothes, I realised there were nowhere to put my clothes therefore i just left it in the suitcase. I was a bit bored as none of other deaf volunteers arrived yet and some was away to mount lavinia beach so I amused myself by watching desperate housewives on my apple mac. I felt tired so I put my beloved laptop aside, 5 minutes later I was asleep! Three hours later I woken up to find that it was 3pm already! I decided to change into fresh set of clothes cos it was hot, sweaty and I had been wearing these for long hours from leaving home to arriving here. I went to next door (Yasintha's family home, I'm staying in her aunty house) I was chuffed to see Molly, Sandra and Francesca! I felt a bit better after we had a catch up with a lot of news. That night, more volunteers arrived and in total it was 15 of us. 6 of us deaf and the rest was hearing. We politely introduced ourselves and after we all had sorted out our things, we sat down for dinner which was rice, devilled chicken and oh my god it was HOT as in spicy!!! I thought to myself How the heck am I going to eat for 8 weeks! .
