Hiya All,
So I made it out to the States in one piece...looks like I left just in time what with the ash cloud appearing again!
Found my way to the hostel ok and was kept amused on the subway by some random guy yelling to everyone 'why do American women love sex so much?!' Im glad he was at the other end of the tube carriage!
My first night was one where I seriously learnt the importance of ear plugs and an eye mask when sharing a room with 11 other people. Had a brilliant snorer, was tempted to begin throwing things at her but decided id rather keep my pillows/shoes.
i spent the day in New York on Thursday, did a huge amount of walking and ended up with rather sore feet! Took at trip to the NYC Opera House, didnt think i could miss that. Watched some crazy window cleaners up the Trump Tower (there are some pics in my photo albums) Also headed into Tiffanys, looked very out of place dressed in jeans, trainers and a hoodie but decided i didnt really care. After chatting with one of the security guards he suggested I headed up to the mezzanine to look at the watches, so I did. Didnt expect a guy in the lift all set to press the button for me! The mezzanine was like a living room, all posh sofas and desks with a few watches dotted about in glass cabinets. The most expensive watch i was shown was $47,000, and so not worth it in my opinion!
For all you guys who know him I met Matt Watkins for dinner, hes out in NYC working on the new Cirque show at Radio City so was nice to catch up.
I headed to bed armed with ear plugs and an eye mask which gave me a much better nights sleep until i woke up, both ear plugs had fallen out and id lost one, plus the wonderful snorer was going full pelt...i found that a hoodie over my ears helped.
Spent the weekend in Boston which was lovely. Randomly saw Dave whos show had toured to a theatre just around the corner from my hostel! They were having an aftershow party in their paint shop (v america) it was all decked out with fairy lights, random models dressed in summer clothes, and an all male Lady Gaga band! At about midnight a group of us headed off to a local bar where you could set up an account...you received a card with a list of 100 beers and you had to drink all those beers in 180 days to get a free engraved beer mug. Some of the local crew had already managed it and were enjoying their beer mugs that held almost 2 pints of beer. i tried a beer i decided sounded interesting called 'Butternuts porkslap' It wasnt nice, but the beer can with two pigs jumping up and belly slapping each other almost made it worth it.
Now in that hostel I had a full on snoring orchestra in my dorm, three of them all at different pitches...i was glad id drunk enough beer to not notice the racket.
Fell in love with Boston as a city. Its very clean and spacious. Took a very cold trip out to a place called Spectacle Island which is a tiny island that has been completely left to nature and no one except the rangers stay out there. i joined some of the rangers on their break and we chatted about English food etc. ive recommended they try marmite although didnt get any of their contact details so will never know if they liked it.
Theres an incredible place inside the Mary Baker Eddy library called the Mapparium. its a 30ft glass globe that you walk inside. its lit from the outside and really amazing! The guy that built it decided that when you look at a globe you cant see all of it and that if you look at it from the inside you can see the whole world, makes sense really.
Wandered to a festival on the river bank where there were bands and loads of free food stalls (always good when your on a budget!) The uni rowing teams were out practicing so that was good to watch. Stumbled on a random one man band who was singing about loving chocolate, weird!
Also met Cindy and her family who runs the camp i work on. Was great to see them, we had a lovely dinner and a wander around the aquarium there, looking at the very cute penguins (it was tempting to try and fit one in my rucksack)
So now im in Kentucky with Ashley. its pretty hot but quite stormy! We were on tornado watch last night and expecting huge storms, aparently 36 tornados touched down in the lasy 24 hours in the surrounding area and states, but luckily nothing too near us! Hopeing the weather stays dry tonight so we can go to a local baseball game which should be interesing.
Hope everyones well at home! Would be lovely to hear from you all. xx
* ive uploaded my pics in the photo albums on here if anyone wants a look :)
