Camp is finished and i have made it to Los Angeles!
The last week of camp was lots of fun and amazingly the weather changed and our show weekend was sunny. i was sad to say goodbye to the campers but even more sad to say goodbye to the staff who have become some amazing friends. On the final night the campers stay at camp they are allowed to stay up all night as long as they are on their floors. I worked the 3am-8am shift, making sure all the campers were on their floors an safe and that all staff who were sitting up were ok. At about 5am I had a radio call from the boys dorm saying I should head over...i headed to that side of camp only to find the huge tree infront of the dorm had been filled with toilet paper streamers! The guys sitting floor duty claimed to have no idea who had done it (to any members of Frat row who are reading this, you did have me fooled!) it was something that everyone took some time to look at the following morning, before the guys fessed up and claimed responsibility and followed up that claim by clearing up the toilet paper and placing it all in the camp directors office!
Camp always feels strangely peaceful after all the campers leave and as a group of staff everyone begins to think about packing. We always think the campers bring a lot of stuff, but its amazing how much we accumulate as staff over 10weeks. In the evening we have a huge staff chinese dinner along with awards and a slide show of photos from the summer. it was really good fun this year. i was awarded my assassins trophies which were heavy so have had to stay at camp and i was also given an award for being the person most likely to be found, writing, carrying or throwing away a list (its the only way i manage to remember everything, however i am very aware I write them a lot!)
The evening then continued down at the local bar. We also set of candles across the lake which is always beautiful...except we didnt quite have enough candles this year so Ant had to rescue and re-use a couple! A good, if rather late night, was had by all.
Most of the staff left camp on the Monday and it was hard to say goodbye to a lot of people. Although I did get a ride on a Harley Davidson motorbike which made staying an extra day very worth it! The views around the camp area are stunning and it was a prefect, sunny afternoon.
A big group of us left camp on the Tuesday and headed into the city. Whilst we were on the bus we heard about the earthquake (none of us felt it!) but by the time we got to New York all was fine. I went to see the new Cirque du Soleil show at Radio City which was incredible! The visual effects of the show were magic and of course the performers never fail to amaze you. Radio City itself is beautiful. The original decor has been kept and it is full of chandeliers, mirrors and the bathroom even still had the powder room.
A big group of us from camp met for a picnic in Central Park which was really nice and in the evening we went to watch 'Fuezabruta' which is a site specific show where the action happens all around you. A huge, what i can only describe as a swimming pool, is lowered over your head and people slide around in it above you. They even make it rain inside at the end and turn it in to a kind if rave...so we all got rather soggy! We went to Max Brenners chocolate restaurant for dinner which was amazing. The place smelled fantastic and the food was really good. The fries were dusted in chilli and cocoa powder!
I managed to leave New York before the hurricane hit which was good and ive had 6 days in LA with some family friends. ive seen the Hollywood sign, done the walk of fame, hit Santa Monica and Virginia beaches and just generally enjoyed the heat. Our day at Universal Studios was great fun and some of the 3D & 4D effect rides are just incredible.
So, tonight i fly to New Zealand so i have my warmer clothes at the ready! Im hoping the weather wont be too bad, but i am looking forward to seeing a bit of the rugby world cup (even if it is just from the pub with a pint in hand!)
