We have now spent the last few days on the amalfi coast. We based ourselves in Salerno and caught daily fast ferries to the best the amalfi coast has to offer... Positano, Capri, and Amalfi.
It's hard to describe this area ... think of building the most impossible structures either on top , the edge or on the side of a cliff and that is the Amalfi coast! Incredible really! There are villages dotted all along the coastline which we viewed from the sea, and every multi- storied apartment hotel, church, fort and residence possible is built into the cliff faces, some colorful and some white washed but all beautiful to create the uniqueness that is the amalfi coastline. The ferry is the best way to make our way from village to village. There is a road along the coastline, but it looks precarious and we can see tourist busses almost chugging there way along, so the traveling would be slow. Positano is the best of the coastline villages, but the incredibly pebbled beach kills our feet!
Capri is the pick of the bunch however, reached by a jet ferry. It is quite mountainous and therefore a cable car ride is needed in order to make our way to the top of the island and the exclusive shopping, dining and hotel experiences available, but this is very manageable. The views therefore are spectacular, and the colour of the Mediterranean is the most brilliant blue that we have seen. I guess that's why the "blue grotto" is a tourist attraction here! I think I have found the place for a future special birthday celebration!
