I promise my next blog won't be this long and check my Facebook page soon for some photos. If were not friends, just add me!
I just wanted to shoot you an update about my travels thus far. So last Wednesday I rolled into the wonderfully sleezy Cancun, Mexico with my expectations set low. Turns out that was a good bet because the weather wasn't great, the beaches on the strip were so so and all the "cool" bars charge cover every night - and I didn't feel a need to pretend I was on college spring break so I wasn't going to pay cover. The only good things were the amazing quesadilla place right next to the hostel, a room to myself at the hostel and a bus to get the hell out of there.
My next stop was to Chichen Itza, which was pretty cool. Tons of tourists but it is worth seeing, especially if you beat the busses of tourists by arriving early in the morning. Check out my Facebook page soon for photos. After that it was off to Vallalodid, a small town that had La Candeleria, an amazing hostel with tons of cool people. I spent the next couple days swimming in these natural sinkholes called cenotes and sharing beers with other travelers. It was a welcome change.
I then did a brief stint in Tulum, Mexico (one night). Everyone said to go there but I was hugely disappointed. I'm not sure why people like this small, overpriced coastal town - the beaches weren't even that great. Don't go unless you want to meet other travelers at the Weary Traveler hostel and get tanked on their cheap beers. Did someone say Cancun revisited?
So now I'm in Orange Walk, Belize (arrived yesterday). IT IS GREAT. Everyone's got a Carribean attitude, the foods good and cheap, AND my hotel is also cheap and has premium cable with HBO, Showtime and Cinemax (also local commercials and news from Denver ... random) Today was the best day yet as I did a river/ruins tour. It was about 3 hours of nature watching (crocs, birds, turtles, iguanas) and included a tour of one of the oldest Mayan ruins in Belize, Lamanai. The ruins were great and the people on the boat were fun to hang with. I strongly recommend getting a tour from Jungle River Tours if you are in or around Orange Walk, Belize - They are amazing and eco-certified!
Hope you are all doing well!
