Arrived in Delhi at 06.20, OMG it's hot!! Once we'd got our rucksacks we made our way out to where our 'taxi' was waiting. A young Indian lad handed us over to the taxi driver and we were off! Driving to the hotel was an experience, everyone honking their horns and driving all over the place, there were road markings but everyone disregarded this and did their own thing, including our driver! The smells are unreal, shanty's and people asleep on the street, dry, spicy smell in the air from the second you got off the plane which just intensified the further into Delhi we went. Our hotel was about 25 mins from the airport, as we drove from quite open areas into Parha Ganj it became more and more crowded and everything just intensified especially when we turned down the road to our hotel! Hopefully you'll get the idea from the pics but you've got to be here to believe it! Once we got to the hotel we found we had to tip the driver so thankyou for the 1000Rs Gurjit, we hadn't got any more currency so you saved us!
After the longest check-in in the world we were shown to our room by a very friendly guy who was clearly after a big tip, I told him not to eat yellow snow but I don't think he got it ha ha! The room is basic to say the least but what do you expect for £7 per night, at least we had a western toilet and something that resembles a shower. There was a suspect stain on the sheet on the bed but apart from that it was clean(ish), anyway it gave me chance to use my brand new silk sleeping bag liner, it's just soooo hot!
Once we'd settled in a bit we had a sleep before setting out into Delhi. As soon as you step outside you are met with hustle and bustle and straight away people on their stalls shouting at you to come over to look at whatever it is they are selling. This mixed in with hundreds of people, cows, tuk tuks, bikes, cars, taxis makes for an interesting time just crossing the road!
We had a look at our map and decided to get a bike taxi to Connaught Place as we were told this was less busy and cooler. This was an experience! People everywhere and this bike trying to get through was almost white knuckle but we soon got there (in one piece!).
By this time we were getting hungry so we found this tiny restaurant/ghetto cafe with somebody making fresh naan bread outside which meant we obviously had to go in!
We ordered a butter naan and some chicken massalla that nearly blew my head off! It was nice but too hot so the waiter calmed it down with cream so i could eat it. It was nice and cheap so couldn't really complain and I haven't had 'Delhi Belly' yet so thats got to be a good thing!
We caught a motorised tuk tuk to take us back to the hotel and by that time we were so knackered we could only just make it to the rooftop terrace for one drink before we had to go to bed!
No A/C in the room so it was a night under the fan in boiling heat, not great but only here for 2 days then moving on the Varanasi.
We've met a few fellow travellers and everyone seems really friendly so it's different, but a really cool place to stay.
Thank the lord for small mercies, got UTorrent running, we will be watching Buzzcocks this evening in our room, some home comforts we can't do without ha ha!
See you next time x x x
