Ben & Sara's Trip
We arrived in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon and checked into the Hotel Britton. After we'd checked in we went for a walk up to Union Square and then down to the Ferry Building on the Embracadero. We spent Sunday evening planning a few details of the trip and booking the rest of the accomodation in San Francisco.
On Monday we woke up to a beautiful summers day and also to the American "Day Without Immigrants". This pretty much meant that Market Street was out of bounds because there were thousands of pro immigrant protesters marching in protest at the day!! We had breakfast in a good old fashioned American drive-in, I had the pancakes and egg and Sara had the Waffles, still got to get used to the idea of sweet and savoury on the same plate!! From there we walked down Mission to the Pier Front where we got a terrific view of the Bay Bridge before carrying on up the Embracadero. We made our way up to Levis Plaza where we had a bit of a rest and sat in this beautiful park with a fountain running through it, it was a really picturesque setting. It was at this time I also realised my phone wasn't locked and had made a few international calls from my bag, nice work but what do you expect from me!! Then we walked up to Pier 39 which isthe real touristy bit right next to Fishermans Wharf. We had a walk down the pier and saw the Sea Lions basking in the sunshine. From there we wandered through the shops on Fishermans Wharf and went to have a look at the Musee Mechanique, where they have loads of old toys and viseo games and we saw an old Submarine and Merchant Ship from WWII. Instead of walking back to the hotel from there, which is a fair old distance, we took the Cable Car across town, it's amazing that even now they still turn the cars around manually on a turntable at either end!! We were then torn between heading back to the hotel for a bit or going to look at the Civic Centre and United Nations Boulevard which is what we did and we ended up catching the back end of the protest marches. Still we had covered quite a lot in the day!!
Monday evening we went to the A T & T park to watch the San Francisco Giants play the San Diego Padres, we got seats in the bleachers which was an experience in itself and probably provided more entertainement than the baseball!! Even the Giants faithful were mainly gone by the bottome of the 7th but we stayed until the bottom of the eighth before walking back to the Hotel. The Giants lost 10-4 in the end.
This morning we have moved across town to the Green Tortoise Backpackers Hostel which is a little more suited to our budget and has a much more authentic backpackers feel to it!! This afternoon we're going back up to Pier 39 and Fishermans Wharf and we're going to check out the Aquarium of the Bay. More to follow soon!!
