WOW - it's amazing how many things you can see and do in only two weeks!
I arrived at Perth airport mid November and after only being in Australia for an hour, I meet the first nice person. Gabriel, a guy working at the airport offers me a ride into town... well that was easy!
It turns out that he is a great guy with a family and a hungry stomach, so we end up dropping my stuff at a hostel and going out for lunch.
That was Friday... Saturday I go to Rottnest Island to enjoy the nature and beaches and to meet up with Gabriel and his friends on his boat. I spent the weekend with them fishing and having fun. I already LOVED Australia!
Back at the hostel, Monday, I met this fun girl, Teresa, from Canada. We agreed to hitchhike south towards Magrethe River. We found a ride and left Fremantle in a wan with a massage guy... Slept on a beach and came to Dunsborough just as the school kids finished year 12.... NO accomandation! But Gabriel had a friend there who gave us a room in his lovely house (for free) and showed us the nightlife. Lots of fun. Teresa and I also hired some bikes and visited the sight in the area (a cave, a brewery that made chilli beers etc.).
We had a ball and hitched on to Magrethe River, even though we knew there was no hostels available... we just counted on meeting somebody nice... and we did.
In M.R. we went to a coffee shop and there was ONE man there... John the winetour-guide.... who happened to have a spare livingroom floor at his great community. He had the day of, so he gave us a free tour around the beautiful area - surf beaches, nature, wineries and restaurants. We just had to write an article about it, and help him test out lunch at an amazing vineyard.... cheep ha?
We met his friends and had lots of fun (skate comps., crashing parties, surf comps. etc.)
After a couple of days Teresa had to head back to Perth and I took a bus to Pemberton. Iin the bus I met a english guy called James. We both going to Pemberton and ended up doing a "hike" together the next day. Six kilometers to a big lovely lake in the forest and back.... visiting three vineyards (you have to drink in this heat! ). We also climbed the Glouster Tree (a massive tree in which you can climb right to the top!).
Then I got a ride with a couple to Denmark... No, the town name has NOTHING to do with the country - a dutch man called "Denmark" founded the town. It was a small sweet town where I just crashed. You do get sick of sightseeing (there is a limit to how impressed you can get with another big tree or white beach). So I had a day doing nada!
But at my hostel was a canadian guy named Brian, who also was doing nada... and he had a car.... So I got in that and we drove to the Stirling Ranges and climbed a mountain - it was AMAZING! From there we went to Esperance and partied for a couple of days. I can hereby comfirm that Esperance has the most beautiful beaches in the world!!!!
At this time I was looking for a ride across the Nullabor Plain, and in Esperance I found a van with a dog and a man. So after going to Kalgoorlie (where I am now) with Brian, the van-man Gareth, is gonna pick me up and we'll be heading east towards Adelaide....
As you can hear I'm doing well! Meeting fantastic, weird and funny people and saving a bit of money on my way.
I hope you're all okay and I'll talk to you "on the other side".
Lots of love from Signe.
