A least ten times a day, I get asked "Where are you from", "You're from Oz right" "I can't pick you're accent" etc. I never thought I would say this, but it's started to bug me! It's enough as a traveller having to tell your story over and over to all the people you meet, but also having to explain you accent and having people "wow, you speak so good english"... sometimes you just want to fit in!
Don't get me wrong - I'm very proud and glad that I speak good english, but sometimes you just want to fit in - and believe it or not, I don't like being focus of a group!
So I have caught myself trying to make my accent a bit heavier (english or aussie) so people wouldn't pay attention.
It was then I realized that I've turned english! My first language now is english! First it scared me a bit, but now I like it. I can't imagine speaking danish anymore. I even try to avoid danes, because I don't feel comfy speaking danish anymore - I really have to concentrate! I met a dane one day, and he said laughing "yep, you are really crap a danish!"
The weird thing is, that in my mind danish and english are as one... If I have sudden outburst (frightend, mad etc.), I'll say danish phraces, but I think and live in english. And I find it easy writing in danish (though english words do drop in without notice!). But talking - -puhha - that's tough!
I'm lucky - I speak english without the danish accent and I feel english... but it makes my smile and impressed by the human brain - that it's possible to communicate with so many different signs (=languages).
I can only say - pick up languages where you can - it's fun, door-opening and educational!
