Writing this blog is a way to keep all you friends and family informed but also a way to let reality hit me - in this case, trying to realize that I'll be home in a week...! Not that it's helping very much right now, but hey! :o)
Victoria was beautiful. And old pretty small big city with relaxed and friendly people. I did go whale watching... three times! But I only saw a whale once. Don't worry, I didn't pay for more than once, Teresa just has good contacts! hehe... The trips also gave great incedents with seals, sealions, porpus and other animals, and going 30 knots over the water is fun!
One evening Teresa and I went to a bar, to meet up with some of her friends (I can legally drink in Canada - JUBI!). We were chatting along and it turned out that two of them were going skiing the next day, at Mt. Washington, further up north on the island... and I couldn't see any reason why I shouldn't go with them! So I went home with Chris and Mike that night and got up at five AM and took of for skiing. Jep, we were tired and I had only small red china-shoes, cotten pants, a small thin jacket and possumwool gloves... Talk about living in the moment! Luckely the boys had some clothes and a pair of skies, so all I needed was boots and a day pass.
Driving towards the mountains it rained, and then it turned into heavy snow! And it snowed! There were close to nobody there, and the slopes were like offpists - a meter of powdersnow! I hadn't tried to much skiing like that, and with my a bit too long skies, legs that were out of shape and lack of visiblety (can't spell that!) (you could see absolutely NADA at the top!) I fought for my case, had fun, got wet - but could proudly at the end of the day sit down with a cup of tea, saying - I've skied in powder! :o) What a great day!!!!Â
There's no snow here in Seattle. I got here again after a long day of waiting for busses/ferries (public transport sucks in CA, but is nearly non-existing here in Washington!) and Kristin and Karmen are housing me.
Until now, I've done a bit of sightseeing and shopping, but it's hard to keep the mind from going home, worrying about a place to stay, work, school, friends - looking forward to it, but at the same time dead scared!
Therefor I have started working voluteer at a homeless shelter! And I love it! It's a shelter for young people (18-25) where they can eat, sleep, get help with hospital, work etc., talk, play games, do laundry, shower and be safe. We open at 0900 PM and the lights are out at 1030 PM. Lights on at 7 AM and everybody out at 8 AM. I only work mornings and evenings and we simply just have to be there to keep an eye out and to be social. It's very eyeopening and fun. The other volunteers are great, we just had a "fiesta de gracias" for the volunteers yesterday, where I met some nice mates, and spending a night there gives you a warm feeling. Plus, it keeps my mind occupied! :o)
But what has this trip given me/what have I gained?
- weight! - happiness - memoirs - maturity - tolerence - taint - bigger calves from hiking - friends - good and bad life experiences - an urge to learn and see - courage to do what I want (be a wildlife/behavoir vet) - an emty bank account - realization of the small values in life (eg. there are mailboxes on every corner in DK - I miss that!) - good contacts for future education and relation - stronger oppinions - learned to be alone - relaxation - spontanity - fun - seriouness - a smaller world that grows all the time - a whole new meaning of life....
But, Denmark keeps sneaking up on me, eventhough I'm sure I wont really realize before I land in Copenhagen. I would already now like to apolegize if I'm distant, confused, tired and not able to give you a straight answer... It's probably gonna take some time to throw this lifestyle of my back again.
Thanks to everybody I've met around the world for making your part of my trip, thank you to everyone at home for letting me know that you're there.
I'll miss the world and will be coming back strongly, but know I'm also looking forward to appreciate what has always been there, right in front of my nose....
Thanks... Signe.Â
