Dave’s Travel Blog
Neither of us slept very well last night. We had breakfast at the hotel and then set off on our adventure to see the "Big Buddha". We had to take 2 subway routes to get there. Hong Kong truly has a great subway system - very easy to use and understand ( especially when I have Jean as a guide!) At the terminus was a factory outlet for many of the name brands. We shopped there for about an hour not buying anything. We looked at the lineup for the sky tram and decided to take the bus up to the top as the lineups meant a wait of at least 2 hours. As it was, the bus lineup was an hour. While we were waiting, we chatted with a young girl from Munich who is travelling around East Asia. We had a great conversation about the refugee crisis in Europe. The bus trip was quite exciting as it climbed up some very steep hills to where "Big Buddha" was. This statue was created as a tourist attraction and it certainly was that today! We climbed up to the statue and roamed around the gardens. Then we met up with our new German friend and shared a taxi to this little coastal town called Tai O. We wandered around and then got into the lineup for the bus. We discovered the bus came hourly and there were at least 3 bus loads waiting. Jean and I decided to hire a taxi for $40 cdn for the 45 minute trip back to the subway. We returned to Kowloon and wandered the streets until we came to a delightful little square with all sorts of little restaurants and so we decided to try one. We ordered barbecued pork on rice and some veggies. The food was SO delicious. All around the square, the buildings were decorated with Christmas decorations. We walked back to our hotel, stopping along the way to buy dessert- egg custard tarts- very yummy! Now we are getting things packed away as tomorrow we fly back to Vancouver. Our vacation is coming to an end!
