Dave’s Travel Blog
Today was our first full day in Hong Kong. The plan was that we would meet up in the hotel lobby at 10:00am with Jenny Fung who is a friend of Gary and Sunni. Unfortunately, it was also jet lag time! We went to bed early the night before and this morning I woke up and looked at the clock which, to my horror, read 9:57am!! Simultaneously, the phone rang. "Hi Dave, this is Jenny- where are you?" Oh my, what a way to impress our guide to Hong Kong! Jean hurriedly got dressed while I jumped in the shower (can't function without one). We made our apologies and off we went. First on the subway and then on the quaint trolley buses to the oldest section of Hong Kong. We saw some really interesting areas! You might be interested in knowing that a 460 sq ft apartment sells for 2.6 million Hong Kong dollars which is about $460,000 cdn. We walked past an area where merchants were selling dried marine life of every sort. It was also very interesting to see little restaurants with tubs containing live fish outside on the sidewalk. I had a preconception that the streets would be wall to wall people and in some places this was the case. Everyone is very friendly and loud! Jenny took us to a very famous mom and pop restaurant where the specialty is dumplings. We had 3 different types including mutton filling, seafood filling, and vegetarian filling. I didn't really like the mutton- too strong tasting! The others were quite delicious. We wandered up and down some pretty steep hills finally arriving at the tram going to the top of Victoria Peak. It was renowned at the beginning of the Japanese invasion as the last place of resistance by the British before they surrendered. We parted company with Jenny at this point and took the tram up to the top of Victoria Peak. The slope the tram travelled up was 27 degrees! All along the route were apartments, which due to the angle we were travelling seemed very strange! Along the way, we passed the HSBC building and took some pics of the famous lion statues in front of the building. The views from the top were magnificent and we spent a considerable amount of time up there. When we got back down we walked to where the Star Ferry terminal was and took the ferry back to Kowloon. This evening, we walked to a restaurant which has been run continually by the same family for 161 years. They are famous for a sweet sauce they serve on beef. We ordered one dish of beef and one of garoupa which is a fish dish. We had 2 sodas and for dessert, a slice of French toast.( a dessert specialty in HK). The cost? $100.00 cdn. Food is hugely expensive as is everything else. We walked back home and it is now 10:00pm so we will sleep after a very busy day!
