G'day friends and family! I hope you are all keeping well, i want to start this blog entry off my apologising for how long it has been since i got you all up to date on what i've been doing, where i am etc...you would of thought that as i am now in one place i should have tons of time, but quite the opposite! Life in the country where they have very funny ways of calling certain things like...flip flops are thongs, strappy tops are singlets, kissing is paching has been one big party so farrr and just ridiculously crazy, messy and funny!!
So, since my last blog, myself and Kate spent just over a week in Sydney in the rain! As a city i think i will love Sydney, but in summer, it was very rainy and slippery - i fell over a few times in the middle of the street much to everyone else amusement! Due to money and well, lack of it we decided to catch the first available flight up to Cairns and work for a few months before even attempting to travel the east coast of OZ!
Cairns is in the state of Queensland and in northern OZ, and its subtropical (wooohooo) so hot hot hot! If we're going to stop in a place for a long time then it's of course going to have to be somewhere hot! Thanks to one of Kate's oldest friends we got in touch with a girl called JO about a flat and well, that was the start of our new lives in Cairns. Our new housemates picked us up from the airport and we moved straight into our little flat on Mcleod Street, Cairns. The flat itself is a building with 5 flats, each sleeping 7 people. Our room is a triple room, but doubles and singles are also available, the place is called SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY, its cool. We've got a little pool, vending machine and little decking areas outside where we can eat. It's small but cute, and well home for now i suppose. Our housemates are cool as well, although we've now been here nearly 10 wks and it does constantly change but there is Lee, Ben and Liam (the three that haven't moved) and there was boy Jo (who we shared a room with but moved out) and girl Jo (who we lived with for about 6 weeks in our room). pheeew!
We arrived on the Tuesday night and had our first night out in Cairns with our new housemates on the Weds where we watched our first AFL match, State of Origin. Not going to lie, i didn't really watch the game rather all the hot guys walking round the bar haha!! Cairns is small, but it has a fair few bars geared toward us backpackers. Everyone talks about the Woolshed, but i didn't think much of it on our first night out! Very small, plays rubbish music and well, it is very calostrophobic. Me and Kate put the night out down as research into what bars we would and wouldn't like to work in ha!
Finding work wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be, infact it came very easy to us. We job hunted for about a day properly with no luck when we heard a bar called RHINOBAR was hiring new staff. We went up for the interviews and both walked out with jobs starting then and there haha! Although we both got jobs, Kate works for a different bar now called Gilligans and i'm still working hard to play harder at RHINOBAR. My job is promo, and well i get paid to talk to people all day and bring them down to the bar, and i also do a few door shifts each week. If you wanted a job title everyone here in Cairns would tell you i am a RHINO GIRL!! Or as a bunch of divers who come into the bar everynight like to call me and KAYLEIGH (who i do promo with - literally the most amazing person i've met since travelling) T1 and T2, the T standing for trouble.
Our first week in Cairns was a bit of a hectic mess as 2000 US navy and marines docked and well, things were crazy. Everybar in town was rammed every night and no girl was left alone for more than 30 seconds of walking into the bar, these sailors were vultures! I found it hilarious, especially on promo when we were dressed in sailors hats and other silly outfits they were all over you. One night i walked about 50 sailors up into the bar, i'd told them all to come back at 8pm when i got a break and would take them to the bar (i was promoing on the esplanade, the main street here along the waterfront of the lagoon). I didnt actually think any of them would come back but literally 50 of them came back to me thinking they were getting special treatment, was rather amusing for me i must say! With all the hecticness settling into life wasn't the easiest and as i'm sure many of you know by now i did think about packing it all in and coming home. Thanks to my mummy and grandaddy who were so unbelievably amazing during that time. Thank g-d i climbed my way back up to the happy place that i'm at now :) and ive not really looked back.
Life in Cairns is basically Rhinobar. I promo on the doorstep of Peter Pan's travel agency 1-4pm and then go around about 8 hostels between 5-8 and let them know whats happening down at the bar each night, and then the door 10pm-2am a few nights a wk!
Just for you all to know whats going on at Rhinobar each night.....
Monday - it's Power Hour! so between 10-11pm people come down to the bar and pay either $6 (with a peg) or $10 (without a peg) and get a wristband and for that magical hour it's all you can drink! wooohoooo!! We literally go around the hostels pegging all the guests, random i know but it's funny.
Tuesday - Hospitality night, it's geared at all the locals and for those long term backpackers who work within the industry. Drink specials all night and lots of travel prizes to be won. Most tuesdays have a theme to them like xmas in july, dance off, coyote, school disco rocks, superheros etc...
Wednesday - SPLASH....it's our beach party where everyone gets a lay! ;) and again we have power hour cos every backpacker loves anything that is cheap and involved alcohol ha!
Thursday - LADIES NIGHT, o what a night! between 10-11pm the ladies get free champagne poured by our very fit rhinoboys who do rip their shirts off during the hr!
Friday and Saturday - Rhinobar is a SUPERPUB as we are open until 5am but lock out is at 3am
Sunday - Sunday sesh goes off at Rhinobar with Rhinodollar auctions. For everydrink that someone buys they get Rhinodollars to use in the auctions and get their hands on bar tabs, jugs of beer, Jagerbombs, Jaigermister t-shirts, rafting trips down the tully river and diving courses on the reef.
So thats us at Rhinobar...i do love it. I am having so much fun working for them and i have met so many amazing people. The only problem with working in a bar is the amount of alcohol drunk, especially when everyday when you finish work you get a knock off...and then get fed Jagerbombs which is Jagermister and redbull in a shot - they are lethal when you have rather a few (maybe 12 in a night, one of the managers Dave did 17 in one night - awful). Once everything gets going we are allowed to, no let me rephrase that, forced up onto the bar to dance not that im complaining cos I LOVE IT! Dancing on the bar...born to do it lol!
As i said earlier we have a lot of themed nights which are an insane amount of fun. Our Xmas in July celebration was huuge and i was dressed up as Mrs Claus all day, best Xmas ever lol! The ultimate outfit came just last week actually on our superhero night. Myself and Kayleigh went all out (as usual ha) and we had little superman pants and yellow singlets with T1 and T2 stuck on in velt and bright red capes and glitter EVERYWHERE! I think the entire of Cairns has seen my bum by now as always seem to be running around town in little pants or chaps for the coyote night with half my bum actually out! But you all know how much i love to dress up so i do have a ridiculous amount of fun. Paid to dress up and have fun...scoreeee!!
I have my own little personal chefs at work as well who cook for me everynight, Alan our friendly chef will literally make me and Kayleigh whatever we so wish, he is so amazing!! and of course, Matt our trainee chef is equally as amazing even though he no longer works there! And of course there are the DJ's, MC Lroy, DJ Nicko and MC Hot Toddy who are extremley funny jumping from the dj booth to the bar and necking drinks like you've never seen before. Nicko likes to dedicate Barbie Girl to me when i'm in the bar...okay i have big boobs but my hair isnt really blonde and well..i in no way shape or form resemble a barbie but still its funny! ha!
We have worked every hour possible to earn some cash to keep on travelling, we've been up here for like 10 weeks now and well Cairns is a small place and i really am starting to get itchy feet, cant wait to get back on that road and get my backpack on my back...miss that feeling a lot! Hopefully a whole bunch of us from Cairns will be doing the east coast at the same time, possibly in convoy which would be unbelievable! If not, we all plan on being in Sydney for Xmas and New Years!
Rhinobar has literally become life, some ways better than others but so much so that i dnt really require any of my other clothing as i live in my uniform which is a little black skirt and red shirt that says rhinobar on the front, and get your horn on on the back - it is highly unflattering and very uncomfi as it has a built in bra which obviously doesnt cover my boobs and i cant breathe in the top so i get very stressed wearing it and have informed my managers who find it hilarious! My managers (there are a lot of them) are fabulous, so much fun! Anyway...other than Rhinobar i havent seen any of Cairns yet, it's awful! I am down the road from the great barrier reef and i've not been but i plan on doing these things as of this week as both me and kate need to do exciting things again, here to see the world and need to take advantage of our surroundings! Cairns has so much to offer, like the reef, bunjys, tablelands, skydives, beaches, lagoon and well just a hell of a lot of fun with the gazillion backpackers that come here. Although at the moment its been really quiet and here aren't too many people to talk to everyday and there once were which is sad for me, but today on the hostel run we got 3 full buses of 30 people so i was very happy with myself!
I have a million and one stories to tell and i could go on forever about my life in Cairns but i will leave at this for now...i will put up photos as soon as possible so you can see some shots of the antics that go on here. For now we are planning on leaving Cairns within the first two weeks of October and heading down the coast to be in Sydney for xmas and New Years and then leaving for Asia at the start of Jan wooop! Also...my fabulous housemate from uni is coming out to play for 3 weeks wooooop, cannot wait philippa bebe :D
For the first time ever we may have reached a half way point to our trip, we cant keep extending and extending forever, as much i would like to butttttt it's looking like i will be home for passover people, or just after...dnt get overly excited though (mother haha) cos plans change constantly in my life at the moment but i promise i will eventually find my way home, for a few months at least!! ;)
Okay...i'm going to leave this entry here for now, and i am going to try my best to keep you all updated on a more regular basis, especially once i start doing all the exciting things around cairns, hopefully going to do me another skydive on mission beach which is 2 hrs south of here....wooop! did love skydiving!! I miss you all lots, and love you all immensely - keep smiling and dancing!!
