Day 16 - 18 Halong Bay
We booked on to a 2 day 1 night package tour on the "Pinta" cruiser around Halong Bay which is three and half hour drive from Hanoi with the obligatory stop at a ceramics factory where you can see the slave labour at work and the prices are inflated by four times.
Although the boat, which is a reconstruction of an old vietnamese junk, can accommodate 16, we are in fact only a group of four for this trip so we basically have the boat to ourselves. The other guests are a couple of girls from Chicago who we make really good friends with. One of them is a mortgage broker and is making the most of the quiet time at work.
Halong Bay is made up of lots of limestone karsts islands similar to those we saw in China (without the sea) and the hongs we sailed around on our honeymoons in Thailand. We spend the days cruising around, swimming, visiting caves, kayaking, and being fed enormous meals which I cannot eat as I am still suffering from Delhi belly (shrinking belly as well). I think we could have done with an extra day as it is all bit of a whirlwind tour but the weather is fantastic. The obligatory stop at the same ceramics factory on the way back is really good for those who missed the chance to buy all the overpriced pots they missed on the way out.
