I am now back in Antigua where my tour finished yesterday. The tour was excellent although we had a very random mix of people...me being the youngest, Petra a 34 yr old from Holland, a mother and daughter from Canada, a couple in their 40s and a 76 year old called Phyllis who we all suspected was originally a Phillip!!Â
Anyway, we travelled all over the country and saw alot in two weeks. We went to Lanquin first and spent a day at Semuc Champney, a beautiful water hole. Then to Flores which is a great little island surrounded by a lake with lots of motorised tuk tuks. We went to the ruins of Tikal at 5.30am for sunrise; although it was too misty to see the sun, the atmosphere was very mistical as all the birds and the monkeys started to make noise and wake up! We stayed on the river at Rio Dulce and took a boat trip to Livingston on the Caribbean side of Guatemala. Here, we also experienced a 7 hour storm in the middle of the night - me and Petra woke up to find our room flooded and all our stuff soaked!
Then onto Monterrico, a black sand beach on the Pacific side, very peaceful but sooooo many mosquitos. Everyone gets eaten alive there! We spent a couple of days on Lago Atitlan and visited all the little villages surrounding it. Then on our way back to Antigua, we stopped off at Chichicastenango, the huge, colourful, famous market.Â
Tomorrow I am off to Honduras to the Bay Islands to attempt to do a scuba diving course although I am very nervous (anyone who has been in water with me will understand)! Wish me luck!! xx
