So from San Juan Del Sur, I headed to Ometepe Island in Nicaragua which has two massive volcanoes on it. I stayed on a beach called Santo Domingo with an amazing view of Volcan Madera. I did some more horse riding, one trip to the petroglyphs which are engravings on huge rocks that have been there for thousands of years and another trip to the agua de ojo. This was a beautiful water hole to take a dip in but it was freezing too! I really liked the island because it was a true image of Nicaraguan life. Every day, the locals go down to the lake (which is so huge, it looks like the sea!) and wash themselves and their clothes on wooden platforms set up on the shore. Everyone rides bicycles or horses and there are many farms for people to grow their own food and live independently.Â
From there, I headed to Managua and got a flight on a very small plane to the Corn Islands on the Carribbean side. The views were great but I was even more nervous than usual flying because you could feel every little movement, being such a small plane! I spent one night on Big Corn Island which was actually abit disappointing - I was expecting paradise but instead it was very busy, had a dirty port and a few odd characters. So the next day, I got the tiny boat across to Little Corn Island - now that was paradise! One of my favourite places so far, I spent four days there. I met a girl called Jennie on the boat and when we arrived we headed to the other side of the island and ended up staying in these great wooden beach huts surrounded by hammocks, (the shower was interesting, just a huge barrel of water and a plastic tub)! It was called Elsa's Place and as it happens, Elsa was abit of a legend - she was about 60 but would stay up late every night with us round the campfires, dancing and drinking rum!  I loved the island, no roads so no cars, everyone was so friendly and beaches were beautiful. Me, Jennie and a guy called Tim climbed up to the lighthouse too where you could see the whole island. The climb up was terrifying but the view was worth it!
I was very sad to leave the island but I had my two day bus journey through four different countries to look forward to! I went from Nicaragua to Honduras to El Salvador (stayed one night there) and then arrived in Guatemala yesterday. Got to Guatemala City and then hopped on a 'chicken bus' to Antigua. Antigua is beautiful, so far everyone has been very friendly and it is such a colourful vibrant place. Today I start a 16 day tour with a group of about 10 people all round Guatemala. Some of the places I wanted to see are abit dangerous to travel to alone so I thought for my piece of mind (and mums!), it would be good to do a tour.
That's all for now. Keep me updated on life at home. I miss you all. xx
