Oh Venice, what a romantic city!
If you didn't know, when planning our trip, I put my foot down and said, "we are going to Venice!". It has been a bucket list item of mine, and I am finally here! And it has not disappointed.
Ok, yes, our room is tiny. And yes, we share a bathroom. But it's all a small price to pay to be in San Marco, Venezia and experiencing this most beautiful city.
Kevin and I both woke up extremely early this morning, unintentionally and were awake for a while. We haven't really adjusted to the time change yet. So we were up, I blogged and Kevin was making moves on our fantasy football team. After being awake for a couple of hours, we both (fortunately) were able to fall back asleep.
Once we woke up, we took our time getting ready and went to a cafe around the corner for brunch. I had a salami sandwich with a cappuccino (did you know cappuccinos were invented in Italy? Me either until this morning), and sat in at the cafe people watching.
Once we finished eating, we hopped on a vaparetto and rode it around the grand canal for a couple of hours and just took italy in. The second time we got to St. Mark's square, we deviated and ventured out.
The square was full of people and so alive!!! We walked around the square for a minute before hopping in line for St. Mark's Basilica. We went in and walked around and while, I must admit, I was a bigger fan of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, butvthis really was a sight to see. I mean, the ceilings were made with gold!
After St. Mark's we went and toured Doge's Palace. Which really was quite epic, but was mostly building suspense for us to cross the Bridge of Sighs.
If you don't know, the Bridge of Sighs got its name because it is the bridge that prisoners walked Down before going to prison. They say, they would look out at Venice from the bridge for one last time and sigh because they would never see the beautiful city again. The view from the bridge really is something.
We finally got to walk over the bridge and toured the prison on the other side. Lucky for us, we got to walk right back over and see Venice once again.
We went into a few other galleries through out the day as we came across them. Only the free ones though. One was this really interesting exhibit of this contemporary artist and the other was a music museum that had a collection of old musical instruments.
We also gave pizza another shot. Still not a fan. But had calamari for dinner and it was excellent. One thing about having a smaller bedroom is there is more encouragement to stay out on the town later. And we did... We stopped at a wine Bar and had a few glasses of wine after dinner. You can stand in the street of Venice, sipping on a glass of wine and no one bothers you. Well, except the guys trying to guilt you into buying roses.
Buona Notte a Tutti!
