Yesterday was our anniversary and our first day in Paris. We have now been married for two years, but have been together for nine. So yesterday was extra special.
When we arrived in Paris on Monday night (September 30), the only real difficulty we had was figuring out that when you buy a ticket for the RER or metro, it is only good for one connection (annoying). Anyways, our flat is right across the street from a metro stop, so once we were on the metr o, it was smooth sailing from there. The flat, while a tiny studio apartment, has its own bathroom and killer view of the Eiffel tower.
Because we arrived on the later side in Monday night, yesterday started with going to pick up our museum pass. Not a big deal, since our next stop was super close: the Pont de Arts bridge.
The Pont de Art is The "love lock" bridge in Paris. People buy a padlock and write their names, initials, whatever on them and then lock it to the bridge. Then to make sure that their lock will never be opened, they throw the keys into the Seine river.
We came prepared with a padlock and found a perfect spot toward the middle of the bridge facing North East. So we began our anniversary celebration by locking our love on the Pont de Arts bridge in Paris (how romantic).
Then we headed over to Notre Dame and made the climb up into the bell tower. What a great view and the cathedral itself is really gorgeous. That's saying a lot considering how many churches and cathedrals we have seen over the past couple weeks.
After Notre Dame we made our way over to the Eiffel tower and just sat at the Champs de Mars park just staring and admiring. But after about an hour or so, it was time to go up.
We unfortunately did not have a reserved time (they were out of reservations as of like 3 months ago at least). So, the choice was to wait over an hour n the line for the lift to take us directly to the top, or we could opt to take the stairs to the second level and then catch a lift up there. We de Oded to take the stairs... All 669 of them.
It was rough, especially once we hit step 500 I was definitely feeling it. But, I pushed on and made it to the second level. Then we caught the lift to the top. I have to say, ate view is quite something. Even though, we were higher at Hancock tower in Chicago, you can't deny the view. We bought a glass of champagne each and toasted to us and watched as the sun began to go down.
After a while of taking it in, we made the climb down. We took the lift down to the second level and walked the steps back down to the ground level (much easier going down than up!)
After the Eiffel tower we found a nice restaurant with a view of the tower and drank champagne, ate amazing food and just enjoyed being in Paris!
The day could not have been any more perfect!
