When we woke up we packed everything and went to Jenny's Café for lunch.I ordered a camembert baguette. It was delicious and so good to have some cheese!Louise and Ruth split the bill between them as my birthday treat which was a nice surprise. We then went next door to the foreign foods supermarket. It was really small but I was able to buy some pasta (at last) and even got some pesto to go with it.The others bought cheese but as I don't have a refrigerator I could not.
We saw in the street some guys wheeling a giant pipe along the road so I quickly took some photographs. There is no end to bizarre sights in China and the novelty still has not worn off!Shaun had given Ruth the address to a place where she could buy cheap contact lenses, as she had lost one and was having difficulty seeing. The taxi seemed to be driving forever but finally we got there and found an optician.Ruth had an eye-test of sorts, in the main shopping area looking at characters which were not English! Then she bought some new contacts in her prescription and we left.It was so unbelievably easy. Why is it in this country that things which should be easy (like buying bus tickets) are difficult, while things that should be harder (like getting contact lenses) are super easy?
We wandered around a shopping centre and I managed to get some Nivea hand cream which was very exciting. No snake essence or sheep placenta in sight! Then I must confess we went to McDonalds for ice cream and to use the toilet. The ice cream was good though. They actually made the chocolate sundae the way it should be, cold ice cream and hot chocolate sauce.Yummy! While we were there I received some text messages from Miss Wang saying another Chinese teacher would be coming to live with me in the same room as the other Chinese teacher.Ruth and Louise thought it was funny but I replied and told her the apartment is too small. This is getting ridiculous!First of all they tell me one teacher is moving in for 10 days. That seems to have been a lie because she is still there. And now they want to move MORE people in?It's only a 2-bedroom apartment!
