To Bilene
Back on the road after breakfast with more helpful advice, and armed with the contact details of our new friends from last night we headed off to Bilene further up the coast. The road is vastly improved & we made good time. Noted huge sugar cane farms which appear to be owned/run/managed by Tongaat / Hulett - a huge SA company.
This area is also known for its cashew nuts which are advertised in a charming way along the road side. See photo. Also patronized a great fruit & veg market and saw brick making kilns along the way. There is an absolute proliferation of subsistence small vendors with their little table of either soft drinks, chips, firewood, charcoal, passion fruit, honey dotted alongside the roads.
Arrived in Bilene in time for lunch. We found a cottage on the beach, it's pretty basic but 10 meters to the edge of the lagoon & 3 mins into the market area it's perfect. This is Glamping as between our gear & what is supplied we are in heaven. Locals call it town but really!! This whole area has seen better days, a lot of the resorts & shops shut up, potholes everywhere - however the informal street vendor still rules! Sadly also selling some huge & endangered shells although I understand it's hard to be idealistic when you are hungry.
A perfect self catered lunch - chill out time then made contact with Ben ( local VIP) & friend of a friend of
Darrel's. We had a lovely explore with him & arranged for further exploration with him tomorrow. Dinner was a seafood platter for 2 with the waves crashing in our ears & undivided attention from the staff as we are the only occupants ended lovely day. ** in case you wonder it is totally out of season here **
